Event planning jobs

Hi all! I'm going to be moving to St. Thomas at the end of September and I've been investigating the job market for a few months now. I had a few interviews when I went down to visit my boyfriend (on island for the past year and a half) in June, but the general impression I got was that people weren't 100% comfortable with me because I still live stateside. I can respect their caution, but it makes it tough for me in the meantime. I'm trying to find a position with the event planning staff of one of the hotels, or with individual event planners on the island. I have two years of experience planning meetings of 400-1500 people so I'm also not just fresh out of college. Anyone have any suggestions for how I can realistically get a foot in the door before I get down there, or would it be better if I waited until I arrive? I also don't want to expend all possibilities before I get down there if waiting until I arrived would give me an edge.

Hello Jessica,

When you send your resume put both your address and contact information in the states and your boyfriend contact information so there is an indication that you aren't just looking but have some attachment in the island already. While folks will still be cautious I'd suggest you continue researching possiabilities so that at least you have places to follow up with once on island rather then starting from the research point then. Good Luck.

Just try and put yourself in their shoes. Imagine how many emails and calls they get with people looking for jobs. It's a daily occurance around here. I get at least 3 or 4 a week myself and I am not even a large hotel!
