I hear you rokipatel! In Haiti we were charged to park at a closed Gas Station by a soldier carrying a machine gun. There is really nothing you can do but pay up. I heard many times that under the dictatorship of Duvalier these kind of things didn't happen, and there was a tourist industry of sorts in those days. I know he was a bloody dictator, but it seems like there is no easy answer to those kind of problems.
Anyway, if you have experienced the DR, STT should be a walk in the park for you!

I think that comparing Miami and the VI is not really a fair comparison. The VI has a high crime rate for the amount of people that live here. The other thing is that, especially here on STT, it's a small island so there is less separation between high-crime areas and low-crime areas. I can't say that I haven't felt uncomfortable here but I also haven't been a victim either. It really comes down to using common sense or "street smarts".

Now, having said that I do think that it's unfair to compare it to the States because as I've said before it is NOT the States. I feel much safer here than I did when I was in Montego Bay or some parts of Puerto Plata. I felt safer in Aruba and Bonaire.

*Sigh*

If you had read the article perhaps you would have understood what it is saying. How many people live in Miami??? ??????? About 100,000 live in the usvi. Based on our population we are one of the most violent places to live. It is simply a fact.

Here's a quote from the article

"The Virgin Island homicide rate per capita is 42 homicides for every 100,000 residents. The national rate is 5.5 slayings per 100,000 residents."

or

"Since 2003 the Daily News began keeping records of shootings in which people or significant property damage was reported, every year's total has greatly surpassed the previous's years."

You're right Rokipatel. I live in Ft. Lauderdale right now and the crime here in South Florida is horrible and they do prey on cops here. One must be extremely careful living here.
