Decent insurance......

Hello all,

In my researching for a potential move down there, I have done some investigating auto insurance. If you are at all military connected you really might want to spend the time getting a quote from USAA! In my case, a really good coverage policy (200K damages, 200K medical, and some other high figure stuff I hope to never need) for full coverage with a $100 deductible was less than the annual cost of the bare bones minimum liability only through Marshal & Sterling! ($440/yr USAA vs $480/yr MS) The bare bones minimum would barely cover minor repairs to a newer car, and the medical isn't enough to get a chipped tooth fixed. Of course, in my case I'm not talking about a Lamborghini (yah, think I'll leave that one at home.....) or anything, but if the rates are comparable in relation to car value it is a really good deal. Interestingly, the value for pay out in case of a total loss is calculated with local comparable vehicle values in mind, so even a beater with low value in the states is worth the minor extra cost for comprehensive. And if you are eligible for USAA, you are eligible for all services (homeowner, renters, personal property, liability). If you tried before and weren't eligible, try again....they have recently changes a lot of rules, and I'm now eligible.

One more interesting tidbit....USAA covers vehicles while in transit and if you have a personal property policy they cover items IN the vehicle during transit as well. As there personal property payout is based on new replacement value, even if stuff doesn't make it it might be a bonus! So, food for thought for all you lucky enough to live there already and a little bit to chew on for those hoping to take the plunge!
