So we have lived in STT before and had to unfortunately come back to the states due to family issues. Well now it is time to come back for good now that our issues are resolved. However, we are thinking about switching islands... We did not have a chance to go over to STX.. I have done my homework about STX flatter, bigger, not a lot of tourist etc. We are wanting to go the Croix route, but I am just driving myself crazy not knowing if I am making he right choice.. Guess because I have never been there, the unknown.. All I really care about is jobs... ( he is a boat/ yacht mechanic inboard & outboard motors not to mention he is a bad ass auto mechanic as well) he would perfer to stay in the marine mechanic world.. With me I am in the medical/ mental health field..
So let me get to my question for those of you that have lived on both islands.. Any pointers, advice, or suggestions?? I feel like I need to go back to what I know, but I like the idea of a flatter non crowed life... Thanks y'all for helping! <3

Can you find work on STX to support your lifestyle?

There is certainly more marine mechanical work on STT - and the RLS hospital seems to have less controversy than the STX hospital.
No reason not to try out STX for a year and see if the fit is better for you - returning to STT if it doesn't work out wouldn't be particularly difficult.

I have only ever lived on STT but one of my best friends moved to STX after 30 yrs. on STT and she really enjoyed the differences. She was surprised at the distances involved in daily life, felt the lifestyle was more laid back and only misses the proximity and ease of travel both to STX and the ability to enjoy the BVI and STJ.

I agree with EZ. You can easily move to St. Thomas, if you find St. Croix not to be for you. We lived on STT for 12 years, and liked it fine, then moved to STX and really liked it much better. Most of the time we were on STT, we lived on our boat, and my husband worked as a boat captain. The proximity to the other islands was also a big draw. After we sold the boat and moved ashore, we found we didn't like STT as much. STX just seemed to fit us better, and real estate was much more reasonable, so we made the jump. We are in our 60's, but I don't really think that matters. We have friends, of all ages, on both islands. It's a very personal choice.
Sounds like you already understand the differences in the islands. Give St. Croix a try, and .....welcome!!

Come on down and welcome to STX. I'm in my 60's. My husband hasn't made that yet so he is still working. Although I've never lived on another island, I just love STX, it's friendly people, it's open spaces, four-lane highway makes getting around easy, art scene, great diving and snorkeling, great beaches, etc. never found anyone I've met that came here willing to work not finding a job.
If you decide to come here, I think you'll love it here.

St Croix will welcome you! We need more marine mechanics because there is very little competition here in the marine industry. Come and open a business!

If you are prepared for the possibility that finding work on STX may take awhile, there should be no problem. Otherwise Stt may be abetter idea.
