Dish network - external hard drive DVR question

We have DISH network and our TIVO died last week. DISH customer service described an option to replace TIVO using an external hard drive as a DVR. The price is much better than a new DISH dvr or TIVO.

Does anyone have any experience with this kind of setup? I buy the hard drive and a one time fee for DISH to set it up. Thanks for any feedback.

Stxer1,
With a 211 or 211k you can hook up your own hard drive and convert the receiver to a DVR for a one time fee of $39.99. Works great! With a built in DVR you'll pay $6 per month. Both would be HD receivers and HD is FREE for life.

Check out our website for available receiver models. www.visatguy.com
If you're a current Dish customer contact us to upgrade your receiver instead of purchasing a new one. It requires a 24 month agreement but beats paying full price. We keep everything in stock. Are you pointed to both satellites 119 and 110?

Using a 211 with an external hard drive works very well as a DVR. Dish's DVR's function does not automatically anticipate what you might want to watch and record it. You need to go into a menu or the channel listing and pick the shows or series you want to watch and select it

I have used an external hard drive on my 211 and I am very satisfied, particularly as Alan says with the 211 once you pay the one time fee of $39.99 and purchase a drive of up to 1 TB for ($65 - $95 ) you don't pay Dish $6 monthly.

If you give up Dish you can always use the HD for backing up a computer.
