Ok Sky, we got some rain fade going on today. LOL. It's ok. Doesn't take long for it to come back on.

We missed the last pitch of Roy Halladay's perfect game last night because of rain fade. Just as he was winding up, we got the "error" message. Don't know which satellite the game was on; I just grabbed by iPhone to see what happened.

Satellite 119 stayed up thru last nights rain.
We're now getting some HD channels on 119!
Up to almost 50 HD channels, not including PPV and Video on Demand.
Sky's, have you heard anything about more about upcoming Dish plans?
I'd love to get Fox News and Vs. in HD

You are correct that 119 is now beaming HD channels. Stateside accounts would either be Eastern or Western Arc meaning they would be assigned 119/110/129 or 72/77/61.5. Neither 129 or 61.5 are good solutions here in the VI so we settle for the HD that we get on the 2 satellites 119/110. With the upcoming 3D tv future I would have to guess ALL channels will be in HD soon but we'll have to wait for the transition which as you pointed out is happening now. You should continue to see more HD trickle in. I counted over 40 the other day and now I'm hearing almost 50 HD channels. FYI The launch of 61.5 replacement was the other day so we'll need to monitor it's footprint when they light it up.
Beeski,
The HD is Free for Life if you log into dish online and agree to the terms of an additional 24 month contract. All new accounts can only be created with HD receivers and come with HD Free with CC autopay and paperless billing. The wait is over. HD is here and the next step is 3d TV. I've been told the MPEG4 HD receivers will be 3d compatible. Dishnetwork will simply update the software when that time comes. Dish had ESPN and some movie channels playing in 3D at the convention. Very cool.

Versus in HD would be my number one request. I can get it in HD now...when there is a free preview, off of 61.5. But they won't sell it to me. If they put it up on 110/119 though that would solve my last big gripe for missing HD.

Got a new LG 55" LCD 2 weeks ago at the Kmart appliance store for $1299...it looks amazing, the DISH HD looks much better than on my older Vizio set.

More is available on 61.5 but..........That requires another dish. Some of the channels don't come in here and some they can't sell you. The reason for them not being able to sell you certain channels could be licensing but is more likely this explanation I received awhile back. To quote Dish "We buy programming for distribution in packages and our provider's contract states that if Dish can't deliver ALL the channels in that pac to a certain area they can't sell ANY of them."

But........
I saw a footprint map for Echostar 15 which will replace 61.5 soon and it showed the Caribbean in a spotbeam. That could mean a small wing antenna may be in our near future.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo., July 11, 2010 /PRNewswire via COMTEX News Network/ -- DISH Network L.L.C., the fastest-growing pay-TV provider in America, today announced the launch of EchoStar XV, the company's second successful satellite launch this year.

When EchoStar XV begins operations later this summer, it will allow DISH Network to continue expanding the largest high definition offering in the U.S. The company currently delivers more than 200 national HD channels as well as HD locals in 156 markets.

Built by Space Systems/Loral, EchoStar XV launched on an International Launch Services Proton/Breeze M vehicle from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan at 2:40 p.m. EDT on Saturday, July 10. After a nine-hour, 13-minute mission, EchoStar XV was successfully released into geosynchronous transfer orbit. The satellite will ultimately reside at 61.5 degrees West Longitude at an altitude of approximately 22,000 miles.

"The launch of EchoStar XV demonstrates DISH Network's continuing commitment to delivering the most high-quality HD programming at the best value," said Tom Cullen, executive vice president. "DISH Network is the only pay-TV provider that offers 'HD Free For Life' to every customer, and we're proud that EchoStar XV will soon allow us to provide even more high definition channels for free."

This from a satellite thread.

"Echostar 15 at 61.5 should be just as usable in Puerto Rico as it is in Florida and the rest of the eastern US. (See the coverage map in the first post of this thread.)"

If this is true your problem may be solved Stiphy

Great news on 61.5! I'm glad Dish has decided that the Caribbean market is worth pursuing and is launching these new spots at us!

Versus and Fox News are listed on Dish Network's channel line up card as being HD but here on STX we get them in SD. Picture quality of Dish's SD digital is better than Innovative's digital pictures.

Rain fade can be a problem. On Tuesday when watching the All Star Game in HD on Fox out of Chicago lost signal three or four times for a couple of minutes each time. Once you lose signal the system takes awhile to reboot. Fortunately this doesn't happen often. Overall they are more reliable than Innovative.

If it is worth it to you to increase the reliability then get a dish larger than 30" and put your satellite receiver on a battery back up unit so your receiver doesn't lose its memory when power glitches and until your generator can come on line.

All sage advice Jim.

Your receiver should not reboot because of a rain fade and shouldn't be losing it's memory after a power interuption.

Here's my take on rainfade.
I've always used the same size dish that I sell. Meaning.....When I started doing satellite we required a 6 ft (1.8 meter) so that's what we sold and that's what I watched. Dish500 8 yrs ago required TWO 6 foot dishes. When we discovered sat 119 on the 1.2 meter (4 ft) was a good compromise between cost of installation and reliabiltiy in the rain I used it at my own house until I was convinced enough to sell them and put my name on it. I continued to stay on the 4 ft from then on. 110 still required a 6 footer in addition though. Then with the satellite 110 replacement we were able to combine the 2 satellites on one dish with a homemade bracket on a 4 or 6 ft dish. As always the bigger the dish the stronger the signal but......The recent 119 launch has enabled us to use the 30 inch Dish500. This dish comes engineered to hold 2 LNBs and focus on 2 satellites in one small package and is approved by Dishnetwork for our area. It also meets the size requirement of 1.0 meter or less for the OTARD law. Every dish size I've used experiences some rain fade. It's usually momentary and bounces right back. When rain affects your signal with Dish you know why it's happening and that it will restore in seconds or minutes. With Innovative you would be guessing why and at their mercy. When I know it's going to be raining hard for an hr or two I switch over to my recordings on the DVR or turn it off and enjoy the rain. In ways the 30 inch Dish500 outperforms even the 6 ft dish as far as a balance between the 2 signal strengths and ease of removal for a bad storm. And it cost alot less to buy, ship, and install.
I've switched my household over to the 30 inch dish since early May and feel it performs as well as any Dish I've had overall.
Keep in mind too that channels are clumped together on transponders, some transponders are stronger than others so you could be raining out on one sat or transponder but some others may still be locking on. FYI The over 14 million subscribers of Dishnetwork in the continental US experience weather related outages as well. Like rain and snow fade and SNOW accumulation on the dish. It's not just an island thing.
A few minutes of rain fade beats days or weeks with no cable. Or when it worked having the sound missing or a grainy picture. Had a client report this morning that while watching the World Cup at a friends the Innovative cable went out "18 times in about 20 minutes".

I can't name one person that has returned to Innovative due to rainfade!! If someone has, they did it for local TV or the dish was most likely not tuned or had obstructions such as tree limbs or vines.

It is just TV afterall. Now WAPA fade is another story. A good UPS is a great investment!
