Employment Help Needed!

I am making the big move on Friday . . .coming down to STT from Pittsburgh to live with my dad and brother on a sailboat moored near Yacht Haven Grande.

I have a BA in English and Secondary Education and have two years' classroom experience. More recently, I have worked in the non-profit sector for an organization that serves people with disabilities. I am single and am coming down without kids or pets. At 34, I think I am maybe a little older then many new transplants. Having worked in human services for my entire career, I have to say that I am definitely a people person!

I would like to pursue a job in education, but have only seen one positing for an English teacher. I am open to doing most other things . . . tourism industry, retail, food/beverage, etc. I know one of the first things I will have to do is get a health card so I am eligible to work in food/beverage.

I know it is still low season so jobs will be harder to come by. Does anyone have any leads I can pursue? My dad and brother have feelers out for me, but I am finding out most places want you on-island before you can apply.

Luckily, I will not be in need of a place to stay immediately. Dad is letting me crash on the boat until I get a job and on my feet. After that, I am hoping to find some folks that need a roommate (pretty quiet and clean!) who live close to wherever I find a job.

Please, any advice/leads would be appreciated.

Much love, Heather

Welcome to the relo board, Heather. Yes, you are correct that people are going to want to see your smiling face before offering jobs.

For education jobs, check out the Department of Education (look at teachislands.vi for information), All Saint's Catherdral School, St Peter and Paul (I think I saw an ad last week for secondary ed), Antilles and Montessori. Do you have special ed certification? Most of the jobs I can think of working with people with disabilities are through private organizations (Center for Independent Living, for example) or the territorial government- Human Services and maybe Health. Go to the Department of Labor for a peek at listed jobs. Again, whenever you talk to someone, ask for other names, agencies, etc.

Yes, you will need a health card if you want food and beverage work. I think the procedure has been posted here.

While a lot of younger people do come here for a short time, I think a lot of slightly older folks come and stay. Maybe something about life experiences and being able to deal with WAPA issues (sorry roki! 😉 ) If you want retail work, sometimes this time of year shopkeepers are looking for bright service-oriented people to fill in some shifts until season starts, so don't count out that sector. Again, wander around downtown, Havensight, Yacht Haven Grande with a resume. The face-to-face approach is always better than calling on the phone, IMHO.

Come back and let us know about your progress! Welcome to the fun house...

Aqua Beachwear at Yacht Haven Grande was looking for a manager (experienced). If they haven't hired someone yet, you might check them out. Best of luck.
