Exterminators

I've been intrigued by all of the "bug" forums lately and began wondering about exterminating. I've completed a search, and still have a few questions, so I am coming to all of you for information again.

1. How many of you rely on exterminators for your bug problems? How many rely on over the counter products?
2. When you have an exterminator, do you sign a monthly contract with someone, knowing that they will come out monthly - or do you call when you see that the creepy crawlies are taking over your house?
3. From a previous post, I saw that it runs about $40/month. Is this correct?
4. Who do most of you use? How reliable are they?
5. We will be bringing our dog with us. When they exterminate, I assume we remove our baby. So, how long do we have to stay off the premises before returning? And, is the service you use safe for pets? We want to get rid of the pests - not our pet.

Thanks, as always, for your insight.

We use American Pest control. They come out monthy but we didn't sign a contract. We pay 50 a month for a large house and cottage. They spray inside and out. We haven't removed ourself or our animals and no ill effects. When we first moved here we tried doing it ourselves. It was more expensive and less effective. Recently we had a flea problem in the yard. It cost 150 to have an acre of yard treated.

We use Termenix, there is no fixed contract, just a fixed rate. A sales associate will come to your house to determine price and often give you tips on how to keep them out. We pay 45, for a large house and cottage. They come once a month, you can determine the time of month best for you. The first thing we asked was how safe their product were for our dogs. They said they are completely safe for dogs and kids, but suggest keeping them outside until it dries so the product stays where it supposed to. It has no smell. Getting close to the end of the month, I might see a centipede but its always dying.

Olivers is the cheapest on the island but I have not been impressed with their effectiveness.

We've been using Oliver's for two years and have had absolutely no problems w/ bugs in the house (except for some pesky, tiny ants). We're on a contract and pay $48/month. Service has been excellent.
