Still in the honeymoon period here. Three months since our move but we knew what we were getting into after having visited repeatedly for years.

We have days of beach and snorkeling/diving followed by days of 4 hours worth of just running around errands(post office, groceries).

Learning new things every day! Was hooked up with someone who makes Pates and ordered a bunch to freeze. Learned that if you want fish you need to find the folks who go fishing for various things and give them your #. They'll call you when they have some fresh.

We hit up farmers markets all the time as well. Instead of being annoyances due to having to go to so many places and spend lots of time they've become adventures and a great way to meet folks and learn.

The majority of crime here is gang related or domestic violence.

What a crock of shit. She was born here. That makes her a native. I was born in MA. That makes me a native of there. Tell me Waderer. Aspbergers?

Would I be a target just because I am a white woman?

It's not exactly like it's a jungle over there where the cannibalistic "natives" hunt for white women with the purpose of eating them alive. Instead, the "targets" are thought to be chosen with the economic considerations. Specifically, you are more likely to be a target if you wear jewelry or flash money. Additionally, you are more likely to be robbed in a place where there is no cell phone coverage. And finally, an invitation for robbery is gladly taken. This includes unlocked cars, valuables left unattended, and homes without the "island-style" protection, such as pit bulls and bars on the windows.

"Native" is fine. "Native Virgin Islander" and ""Ancestral Native Virgin Islander" are highly controversial terms, because of the people who sought to benefit from the designation, at the expense of others.

Controversial to you maybe. I use the phrase native Virgin Islander all the time. I also call myself a "local" although I do know that some very narrow minded people are surprised when they find out I'm white as to them that term seems to equate to Black West Indian.

Give it a rest, wanderer.
You're taking Adelbert Bryan's view and blowing it out of proportion.
It never came to fruition, did it?
I am a Native Virgin Islander.
You're a native of wherever the heck you come from.

You came and visited STX for a month, STJ for 3 weeks the following year, put both places down as neither suited you, so you've moved to go critique wherever else your going next but it won't be the USVI yet you continue to poke your 2¢ piece in with information that is often wrong and ridiculous. Why are you even trolling on this forum.
You've no plans to live here. Go away.

BTW, since I'm 12th generation here, I'd have qualified as Ancestral Native Virgin Islander tho doubt Bert would have.

"Local" is fine with me, too. I call myself a Crucian. The controversy around the ""Ancestral Native Virgin Islander" is not just with me. It was elevated all the way up to the US DOJ, as I pointed out.

Apparently a very isolated and lonely place.

I'm sorry but the whole local/native thing pisses me right off. If you're not Taino decent then you're NOT a native. Period. Oh man I know that'll go over well LMAO!

If you live here you are an islander. Being bahn here to me is no badge of honor nor does it give you the right to look down on newbies. I've seen newbies doing more for these islands than some people who have generations here. I've also seen the opposite... Downright rude and entitled newbies... those usually last a month lol. Why does it even matter?? I respect the hell out of these islands.

Why does it always have to be us vs them? It's ALL A WE! 🙂

To the OP. I almost didn't come three years ago because if the crime posts. This now is home. Will I be here forever? Doubtfull - too many amazing places I want to live before I die but it doesn't have anything to do with island life. I never felt unsafe on STT. Not once. I'm not a crazy party animal but hung in red hook late and downtown late sometimes. Have had my cars broken into twice on both islands but I left stuff in it. My bad.

In STX I felt at first a little "watch my back" -ish. Now two months in that's gone. Don't leave anything in your car and find a good neighborhood. I like having a gate and a cheapie video camera for inside. In STT I rarely locked my doors.

Remember the phrase - opinions are like a-holes? Well lol it's pretty true. You'll know in 3 months if you can hack it - or u want to. If not - consider it an extended vaca.

Agreed. This whole VI native/non-native thing does nothing but separates people into different castes, and propagates tensions. I lived in many places in the states, and never experienced this. The question "Exactly how many generations ago can your ancestry be traced to this place?" just never pops up. It's very unique to VI.

Give it a rest, wanderer. Go away.

I will give it a rest and go away when I feel tired. Kapish?

That's unlikely. I am deep into researching and developing a new anthropological theory which explores the "native" realm. That will take time, so expect to see me here on a regular basis. Now, it's my understanding that you've had enough of VIs and are now transplanting yourself to Florida. I think that makes me more qualified to participate in this board than you.

My relationship with VI is love/hate, as it's probably the same for most people.

Apparently a very isolated and lonely place.

Stay out of this, OT. This is between Alana and me, and we need to settle the score. I will invite you when your input is needed.

Your words which sound so much like those coming from the mouth of a 2 year old throwing a little hissy fit are just TOO precious to resist using.

I will give it a rest and go away when I feel tired. Kapish?.

This is what I'm hoping for and I love farmer's markets. Don't mind at all having to tweek my grocery buying habits and hope for some adventures as well. I am a vegetarian though so will see how well that works.

Thanks for the info W. I didn't quite think it would be like that 🙂 But I did read about an attack on a guy with a hatchet I think it was where the attacker called the guy "whitey" or something like that. Wasn't sure if just being white was reason enough. Sounds like "not usually."

The hatchet man that you read about was a mental case, so I would discount it as such, whether the attack was racially motivated or not. You'll see mentally ill people in VI more often than you see them in the states, for a variety of reasons which deserve its own discussion thread.

Occasional racially-motivated incidents do occur (in both directions), and VI are still segregated geographically, which becomes more visible than the segregation in the states, because the islands are small. To a large extend, these racial tensions are the result of a sizable economic divide between the VI residents. The poverty rates are extremely high (about 30% of VI residents live below the poverty line), and the number of very rich people is also very high. In between, there is a big gap.

Thanks Wanderer- I am not very rich or very poor. Hopefully I can help fill in that middle gap.
