Can someone here tell me please what the procedure is for filing taxes on Stx?
Can you do it electronically or do you have to go to their office in person?

Any help/info appreciated.:-)

You should definitely go to the office. Take a copy of your paperwork and have them STAMP it with date. Keep and file. This is very important in case you have any problems down the road. The staff at BIR can assist you.

That's what I had heard. Is that the office behind Kmart in Sunny Isle?
Does one have to do it in person, or can someone take it there for you? As long as all the paperwork is there and you get the stamp?
Thanks again!

Make SURE to deliver in person and get a copy date stamped. Had someone from the IRB call me saying I hadn't filed my taxes for the yr 2010. ( Note: This phone call came the day after a newspaper article about the VI Gov't being broke). While on the phone w/the IRB lady I pulled out my date stamped copy and told her I had this, she still insisted I had not paid my taxes. I then said I had a copy of the check I wrote and it had cleared my bank and was in my bank statement. She hung up. Never heard from anyone at IRB again.

Also:

If you get a letter from IRB that makes no sense (like, please send proof of payment for something you think you paid), call them for clarification. I once wasted time writing letters to them with proof of payment because I misunderstood what they were asking for. They wanted something from 2 years earlier (a point that was not easy to notice in the letter, and it was a year when I made no payment), and I assumed it was for 1 year earlier (when I had made a payment).

Pay attention to the amount that the IRB refunds you. One year, I indicated that a small part of my overpayment was to be applied to the next tax year, and the rest was to be refunded. They mistakenly refunded the whole thing, which I didn't notice, and that eventually meant that I underpaid for the next tax year, so they charged me a late payment fee of $60. Fun fact: I sat with an IRB rep to sort this out, I paid the fee, she gave me my stamped proof of payment, she answered another question that I had, then looked at her screen and said, "Oh, it says here that you have an outstanding fee for $60." I said, "I just gave you that money 5 minutes ago!"

and keep your paperwork (stamped as received, cancelled checks) FOREVER. I have seen the VI gov't come back almost 20 years after the fact, claiming a particular business tax was not paid, and almost that number of years on a property tax bill. You have the burden of proof as far as they are concerned, even if they never suggested it was missing in all the years between...and never heard an apology from the VI when you prove they were filed and paid!

Not to steal the thread but do you pay your Quarterly estimates(1040-ES) in person or mail it in?

I know nothing about quarterly filing, but I would do NOTHING by mail = go in person, pay, and get receipts.

Pay your quarterly estimates (1040-ES) in person, and get a stamped copy as a receipt. Every form and payment to IRB should be done in person this way, although you can send another person to do it. They don't care who hands it in.

Also, if you're self-employed, there is some good info on this old thread:
https://www.vimovingcenter.com/talk/read.php?4,130144

For example: "Zero out your self-employment tax on your 1040 form, and move that tax to a form 1040-SS, which you then file and pay to the feds (Because later the feds will pay your SS benefits, the VI won't. If you do this wrong, you're going to overpay the VI and underpay the feds, giving you a simultaneous big refund and an annoying penalty. If you're not self-employed, this won't affect you.)"

Thanks all for your replies!

I stopped at the BIR office, and did I see that correct that it is a violation of the law to mail in your tax papers?
Wow, only in the Caribbean hugh...

I beg to differ on this and have proof it is not true especially when it comes to personal income taxes.

We mailed our 2011 tax forms in last year and they accepted them. So there's no way it's a violation of the law to mail your tax papers. We filed an extension in person while on STX in early April 2012, paid estimated taxes we thought might be due. We moved to Ohio May 2012 and in June 2012 mailed our 2011 personal 1040 income tax forms and money owed to the VIRB.

We are once again going to mail in our 1040 to the VIRB as my wife's W-2 was from a VI business January through April 2012. So this will be the last time we have to deal with the VIRB. 😀

Was at IRB on STX today (4/5/13). There is a sign posted stating you must pay/appear in person. Just letting you what their sign says. Who knows, they might take that sign down today because it's wrong. Just saying.

If you must mail, use a return receipt request so that you do have proof your paperwork was rec'd but way better to do it yourself, have your accountant do it and have everything stamped as rec'd and paid. Keep all of your paperwork forever when dealing with USVI. I cannot speak for USA IRB.

Last year when I mailed my income taxes to VIRB (STX) I had a signature confirmation on the mailing so I knew when they got it and who signed for it, along with a copy of the return to be stamped paid and returned in my pre-addressed return envelope. As for the IRS -it is law they can't audit you after 3 yrs, but I keep mine 7 yrs.

Lots of luck to the VIRB mandating pay in person because I'm not buying a r/t air ticket just to deliver it in person. My guess is that this only applies to people who are "full time" residents of USVI..
