I'd like to extend an offer to the board-posting residents of STX in appreciation for the great deal of sound advice and guidance during the time prior to my relocation there. I own and operate a computer consult/design/build business in Ohio and wish to offer my services to STX residents using this board at no charge. I hope that I can repay some of the kindness shown to me and fulfill a need on the island that seems to have been missed by the computer industry there.

My offer is thus: Anyone who contacts me via PM through the board can schedule, at their convenience, an on-site visit by me at which time I will evaluate your system/network, identify your needs, issues and shortfalls, recommend solutions and repair any minor problems at no cost. If I find anything major wrong, I'll recommend solutions and/or repair it for you at half my normal rate. I will be available full-time beginning feb 6 for appointments and can schedule days, nights and weekends. A first-time consult usually takes about two hours to complete and generally concludes with a system/network performing substantially better.

I have been told that there are no techs that will come to your home or office and I intend to offer services designed to bridge that gap. This is a way to thank the kind contributors to this board and a way to begin to build both a reputation and a client base in my new home. Additionally, anyone who refers me to another resulting in a new client for me gets free repair for as long as i live there. Businesses who would like to capitalize on this offer will receive the same deal. Any business who refers me to another shall receive free service for the duration. This deal is only good until I get there, Jan 31, so if you wish to capitalize on this offer, I'll need to schedule you no later than jan 30 for anytime beginning Feb 6. For STT and STJ residents: I have the capability to remote desktop to any Windows XP Pro system/network and can perform most operations from STX. Larger projects may justify a trip to your island. If you are interested in this, please PM me. One more thing. If anyone needs some small computer parts, I can hand carry them at a fraction of the cost of local parts there. Again, PM me with what you need and we can discuss it further. Thanks to all who have offered their time and experience to us newbies.

jnrhome -

Whenever you get here, please PM me or catch me at ssrr@runbox.com

Question - I work off wireless now and have a HORRIBLE time keeping a connection, and I work off the mainland through an intranet site for physicians...any chance that I can do anything on my end that doesn't involve a 2 month wait time from Innovative? I'm computer ignorant - I think I'm your first taker on that freebie thing! I need to have my whole system looked at, but the idea of breaking the computer down and hauling it somewhere doesn't appeal to me...so give me a shout and I'll give you a phone number!

Thanks! And good luck with your move!

Just for those out there who may need this service - jnrhome called almost immediately, and I've had to call him since then for a little tech support, which is snowballing into a LOT of tech support - Couldn't ask for a nicer guy, and his tips WORKED! So far, so good!

Gee, well I'm toadally out of the running because not only am I on STT but I'm a Happy Mac user! Anybody know of anybody REASONABLE AND COMPETENT on STT who can fix stupid basic stuff on an i-Mac which I just don't have the time to do and will come on-site to do so? Maybe barter for some great dinners?

Hey, one can only ask!

STT- Macs are ok with me. I just have found a much bigger group of ibm-compatible people in need. If you could put together a couple people who need what I offer so I could do several stops in one trip, I'd be willing to commute. It would give me a cheap excuse to see STT/STJ, which i am looking for...!

or ibm-compatible, or unix, for that matter. If you could get a few together(personal or business), i'd do it for the cost of the roundtrip from STX!

to get this deal. I will extend a similiar discount program for the month of February. Anyone who mentions this board will receive a 50% discount on services rendered through Feb 28. I will see the folks who contacted me so far on our arranged dates/times, and will follow up with the folks who are off-island or otherwise unable to schedule at this time. Fly out in 25 hours... haven't slept in a while trying to tie up all the loose ends... I don't imagine I will sleep much between now and flight time. Still have to pack (ugh), final dentist trip, etc. It will be nice to sleep on the plane from chicago to SJ. It'll be even nicer to touch down in STX and be HOME!

Hi jnrhome,

Are you still offering set up help to the technologically challenged? We are moving on March 15th to STX and are bringing a computer with us. We'll need a wireless internet connection that works on the North Shore.

How was your trip down? Can't wait to make that final plane trip myself! Counting down the days... Now if we can just get everything done!

Jeff,

What a wonderfully generous -- and much appreciated -- offer! As the number of positive responses already seem to indicate, this is a growing industry down here and I'm extremely confident that your business will thrive, particularly with the offer of on-site service. Word of mouth wills spread to all quarters of the island(s) before you know it.

If you ever need some help to handle overflow, keep in mind that the Hip Hubby is an A+ certified tech. His latest project is setting up a network for my laptop and two cpus -- and I might let him hook his PC into it eventually. 😉 (Yes, we aqdmit we are a totally geeky couple -- we've always owned enough computers to build a network with one in every room of our various homes, bathrooms included.) I'll be sure to let him know we now have a new computer vendor so he'll be sure to hook up with you for everything he can't do himself.

Question - will you also be selling hardware by itself (new or refuribished)?

Best of luck to you -- you're off to a terrific start!

tango-My offer continues to be honored for my board mates. I have several options available for north shore connections and would be happy to assist you in your acquisition and installation. My trip down was uneventful as all flights should be and i've settled in to my new place. Took two weeks to find a suitable vehicle in my price range, but found a real deal finally.

Hip- Thanks for the vote of confidence. With a little luck, i'll be able to utilize your hubby soon. I do have an avenue to get new parts at significant savings as compared to island prices. I don't intend to stock refurbished parts for the immediate future. I liquidated an entire room of them just prior to moving and have no desire to collect that much junk again! It is inevitable that they will pile up over time, but once they do, i'll introduce them garage sale-style to try and reduce the geek clutter my wife hates so much :-] If you need anything, just let me know
Jeff
