Charlotte,
Curious as to why you were asking? I HAD to look at this one cause I know STX is much less than STT!!!!!
They really ARE lucky! 🙂

I wouldn't exactly say "lucky us". The reason we have cheaper gas on STX is because we have the fourth largest oil refinery on EARTH. I'd gladly pay a dollar more per gallon if it meant getting rid of the ugly, polluting refinery, and the rude stateside workers that comprise a portion of its workforce.

(For the record, yes, there are several very nice people that work there, too.)

I will second that. Rather see some Hovensa workers walking around in their coveralls than thousands of overweight and sun burned cruise boat passengers in tank tops and wife beater tee shirts.

the refinery looks like the emerald city at night when all the green lights are lit, and in 14 years i've encountered more rude drunken tourists than hess workers

Well, why is STX always yelling about not getting enough cruise ship passengers then? 😉 Gee, Nug I think you need to move to STJ since you dislike STT & it sounds like from your post on this thread that you're not wild about what happens on STX. 🙂

Trade,
Not everybody is yelling about cruise Ship Passengers! I for one like it just the way it is. However other residents might want the additional tourism dollars to improve their earnings and lifestyle. STX is the only USVI that has an economy without tourism dollars. I also appreciate what Hovensa has done for the island. I also like STT & STJ, but I always felt you got a bigger bang for the buck on STX.

Lol Trade I must've misled you somehow. Trust me, I LOVE STX. I like STJ too, but it's just not my style. Too quiet for me and too expensive. I'll just have to stick to visiting now and then.

About the cruise ship thing: it's all tied to the crime thing. The cruise ships really do help stimulate our economy which in turn helps reduce crime. Bad ecomony = more crime, it works that way all over the world.. That said, I don't like cruise ship tourists anymore than the next guy. But I certainly do love the money they pump into our economy. It's a love/hate thing. Talk to any of the bar/resturaunt owners in Fredricksted and the West end, and they will all tell you that cruise ships make a BIG difference in their bottom lines.

In the end, I could go either way on the cruise ships though. Irie, mon.

As for Hovensa, IMO they hurt us more than they help. I know that we need to put the dang refinery SOMEWHERE, I just wish is was in, say, Puerto Rico. It doesn't bother that much though -- I don't lose sleep over it or anything. I just hate pollution, and Hovensa, despite all their efforts (which are many) still pollutes.

Oh well, what can ya' do, right? Pass the bong and the mamawana. 😀

Lol, well at least it doesn't endanger anyone but ME. Plus, who said I was a drunk? 🙂 I have yet to meet someone who doesn't like the occasional mamawana.

NugBlazer,
Isn't that tied to or have a connection to "The Crime Thing"?

$2.81 where I bought gas yesterday.

And I think Hovensa looks great lit up at night too. I even like the young men who come from Louisiana and Texas to work here. Many have never traveled before and are overwhelmed by the island. You see them in "herds" at Cane Bay -- most look like the sun has never touched their legs before!!!

Charlotte,
So how much are YOU paying for gas? 🙂

Question to others: Does STX have the largest refinerey in the Western Hemisphere?
I never understood WHY we, over here in STT, have to pay more than anywhere else, namely the states, when STX is a sister Island just 40 miles away! Politics I am assuming!

Anyone know the price in PR?

Sherri, I always heard that somebody for some reason made it impossible for the gas to come directly from STX to STT. It has to go to Puerto Rico first so that "somebody" gets a nice little cut. That's what I've always heard, true or not but it always struck me as odd also. I can see it being a little more than STX but not that much.

Lizard,
That is interesting! You'd think that the price would be the same all over the island!

Trade,
That is the same story I have always heard. The amount we pay sure is extreme!
I've also known STX to be the largest refinery in the Western Hemisphere, not sure if that is true?

It is a large refinery, but supposedly there is a larger one in Houston. I have heard Hovensa referred to frequently as the second largest refinery in this hemisphere.

As to shipping gasoline directly Hovensa loads the gasoline on very large tankers. Do you think the cruise ships would want a a large tanker docking in Charlotte Amalie to off load? The gasoline goes to Puerto Rico where is is loaded on smaller ships for regional distribution. Could it done some other way? Sure, have the gas stations on STT buy their own tanker to haul gas from STX to STT.

On STX we have no name brand majors selling gasoline. The station owners buy directly from the refinery and have Bunkers of STX deliver their fuel.

Jim
