According to http://www.api.org/statistics/fueltaxes/upload/gasoline-diesel-summary.pdf , the nationwide average tax on gasoline is 48.8 cents per gallon, with the highest being New York at 67.4 cents, and the lowest being Alaska at 26.4 cents. At 14 cents, the USVI's gasoline tax is lower than all of them (unless we also pay the federal tax of 18.4 cents per gallon. Do we?).

Their gas is still much cheaper than ours, almost everywhere else.
Gee rememeber when we thought paying $3 plus was high?
Yikes!

Actually, on STX at least, gas was one of the things that wasn't more expensive than in Kentucky. That and rum. lol.

I don't understand, if the gas tax went up $.07/gal then how come the retailers jacked the price up by $.30/gal? On my way to work I drive past One Love, Everybody's and Gas City and they all went from around $3.29 to $3.69 the day the tax went into effect.

Lucky you,! You must live STX as ours in STT/STJ is $4.69 - give or take/ and up.
Must be nice to pay, at least $1min. PER GALLON less at pumps that you must SERVICE yourself.

Yes, it's still within 5 cents, either way.

Here is an excerpt from http://virginislandsdailynews.com/news/latest-dlca-survey-shows-sharp-rise-in-retail-prices-for-regular-gas-on-st-croix-1.1347065 :

"Latest DLCA survey shows sharp rise in retail prices for regular gas on St. Croix

Daily News Staff
Published: July 23, 2012

ST. CROIX - Average retail prices for regular gasoline soared on St. Croix over the past week.

Although a higher gas tax and an increase in HOVENSA's wholesale pricing took effect July 16, the hike in the average retail price of regular gasoline on the island between July 12 and July 19 far exceeded those increases.

Retail gasoline price surveys conducted by the V.I. Department of Licensing and Consumer Affairs show that the average price for self-serve regular gasoline on St. Croix jumped by 31 cents per gallon between July 12 and July 19, from $3.321 per gallon to $3.631 per gallon.

However, the combined increases in the gas tax and in HOVENSA's wholesale pricing for regular gasoline that took effect July 16 totaled only 18 cents per gallon.

It was not clear why some retailers on the island raised their prices on regular gasoline so high, although the $3.631 average retail price encompasses a span of prices at gas stations that range from $3.499 to $3.699 per gallon, according to the DLCA survey."

Anyone know where the $3.499/gallon price can be found?

What I do not understand is why gas cost $1.00 more PER GALLON here -STT/STJ - than in STX.
Even with shipping and middle men involved, that is a cost per gallon which considering the thousands of gallons sold here daily, adds up to lots of our $$ going up in fumes.

Gasoline prices are not regulated (except during emergencies)...vendors can sell it for whatever they like.

One has to believe, however, that some form of price fixing must exist in the market.
