getting from st thomas to st croix

Hello!

Help!

I am moving to St. Croix with dogs in a week and am having a difficult time. I was going to fly into St. Croix but my dogs are over the weight limit (the airline I was on never told me there was a weight limit so I had to find out last minute) and just last night had to change my flight to St. Thomas because that was the only other option. I am hoping the ferry will be running because then I can just take the dogs on the ferry and all will be well. But in case the ferry is not running I need a Plan B. Any thoughts? One dog will not make it onto Seaborne, Cape Air no longer flies large dogs, and really I'm looking for what would be most affordable. Any way to charter a boat? Is that way too expensive? Any unknown airline out there that will fly big dogs?

Thanks for any input,

Aspen

I have not yet seen the ferry and I don't know their policy on pets, especially a dog too large for Cape Air and Seaborne.

The least expensive option would probably be a non-stop flight from the states on a jet:

From Miami daily on American Airlines
From Atlanta Tuesdays and Saturdays on Delta
From Charlotte Wednesdays and Saturdays on USAirways

From St. Thomas, since Cape Air and Seaborne won't work, you can charter a plane to take you between STT and STX; Island Airlines, 340-998-9599.

Other possible charter companies include:

ACE Flight Center 776-4141
Air St. Thomas 776-2722
Aircraft Services International Group 777-5969
Bevin's Air Services 776-2197
Bohike International Airways 777-9177
Clint Aero 776-3958

I don't know which companies from this list are still operating but Air St. Thomas used to charge about $500 for the STT to STX trip. I don't know anyone's policy on large dogs.

I know someone with an airplane who might be able to help you out with getting the dogs from STT to STX. Email me at stcroixhomes@hotmail.com and I can put you in touch with him to see if it is possible.

Coastal Air takes dogs, at least they did a few weeks ago. You could call him and find out if he's got a trip between STX and STT around the time you need.

Actually the Delta flight is Wednesdays and Saturdays, and the US Airways flight is Saturdays only.

I called Island Lynx, the new ferry company, this morning (340-713-5969) and they said that will transport any size dog as long as it is in a kennel and the owner goes with it. They have a protected cargo area where the pet would be placed during the trip. The pet charge is $25 one way. Unfortunately, they are still out of service for repairs to the ferry but they expect to be running by Monday morning at the latest.

I don't think the Delta flight will carry large dogs as they have downsized from an Airbus A300 to a regional jet for the flight between Atlanta and STX.

Delta doesn't fly Airbus A300s, they downsized from the Boeing 737 to a regional jet.

cape air will take dogs, as long as they can get the crate in the back. they fly a lot of dogs, becaause they seem to be more pet-friendly. good luck.

Aspen,
I have been in contact with your other half.
Have you heard yet whether the ferry has met its start date deadline? If not, I guess we are still on.
Let me know.

Hi Aspen, Take your dogs on the Fast Ferry. It's much cheaper than any of the airlines!
