Good Hotels for Locals to stay at?

My husband has a day off this friday and we were thinking Saturday night of staying in a (lesser expensive) hotel perhaps in the rainforest or somewhere interesting (preferably on the west end)... Anyone have any ideas? We just wanted a mini vacation to get out and enjoy this beautiful place we have. Since we have kids, it's much easier to have somewhere to stay so we can stay out all day and enjoy life! I called sandcastles on the beach, but not sure how close that really even is to sandy point?
Thanks....
Lindsay

You apparently have contact info for Sand Castles.

Cottages by the Sea is right beside them and a bit less expensive, less polished, less amenities than Sand Castles. We like the people who manage Cottages by the Sea - very accommodating and nice. Probably Paul and Sherree would be the people to speak to. Find contact info by googling "Cottages by the Sea".

Both Sand Castles and Cottages are right on our personal favorite snorkeling and swimming beaches, and a long walk along beach to Sandy Point. I suggest you ask Paul at Cottages or someone local about the best time to go to Sandy Point.
I believe the ranger is only there Sat and Sun until 4pm, and I don't know about this time of year. Personally, I would prefer not to walk that long stretch of isolated beach alone, and even with company would still prefer to do so when the ranger is on duty. You might want to drive to Sandy Point which is the long way around, from the west end of the four lane hiway,(NOT accessible by the road that goes south from Cottages). There are also protected turtle nesting grounds along that long beach walk, so it might be closed during some seasons. All that said, I love to take that walk every time I come to STX.

You can also try www.SugarHillbytheSea.com for less expensive accommodations... a new and newly renovated, landscaped option for vacation rentals, on the ridge of the hillside above Cottages. It is walking distance to the same beaches. I am not sure it is available for less than a minimum number of days. Betty, who I have known for more than 20 years, is a terrific hostess.

Good luck and enjoy

Lindsay -
They have an extensive website at www.caribbeancottages.com

Here's the contact info... given the irregularities of STX communications you might need them all!
Sometimes they answer during other than business hours, and sometimes you must leave a message. It is a small family run business.
