Good evening everyone, I had read on the "relocating website" that i will need to get a health card from the health Dept seeing that I am planning on waiting tables when arrive. Does anyone know more info on this? And, any recommendations on banking and setting up a PO box? Just 182 more days until my arrival :@)

Annie,

Call the hospital and ask. It's been a while since I did on but it was done in two visits in one day with no problems.

Regarding PO boxes it depends on what part of town you live in. I use the Mail Service in Red Hook but they have them all around town. Let us know where you are moving. You will find a lot of information on banking here by using the search function.

Health card is easy really. $$$$ (as most things here begin with) not sure of the amount - it was $35 when I did it two years ago. They want a stool sample and a photo id. Drop off the stool sample and the $$$ then come back in the afternoon for a blood pressure check and get your picture taken. As with many places here, bring a good book or a crochet project.

They also want a social security card, or at least they used to. I haven't been through the process in several years. Could have changed, but I doubt it. Most government agencies want to see your social security card.

The process is much quicker than I anticipated, thought it would take a week or so, because here in Milwaukee anything like that takes time. usually have to go through several steps which take awhile. I am going to initially be staying in Red Hook, I have a place reserved for 30 days while I look for employment and time to find an apt, don't need much more than a small 1 bdrm seeing I am coming by myself. So, I am considering Red Hook or near Havensight, however I am leaving my options open.
Now, correct me if i am wrong on this one... I will have to secure a job before I am considered to be rented to ? ( dumb question on my part, perhaps????)

Annie

P.S. Thanks again for all the input I am receiving from you all. Its all very helpful.

It depends. We moved down without jobs but with other income and found a place immediately. Most landlords will want first, last and one months security. So I guess they figure if you can come up with $2,500 - $3,000 you're probably ok.
