When my dog had this problem, I took him to Dr. Boswell at Sugar Mill. She prescribed some anti-itch pills of some sort, as well as fish oil capsules. She also suggested changing his food to a hypo-allergenic brand called "Royal Canin". However, my dog is really fussy and didn't like the new food...which is fine since he already eats a really fancy organic/human grade dog food from the states (which doesn't have cor, wheat, gluten etc). I also have a soothing spray that I got for him in the states. This seems to have helped. Dr. Boswell was great, and was very anti steroids, harsh treatments--she was very much for treating the cause!

OK, I'll ask the dumb question -- do you have her on Frontline/Revolution/whatever for fleas? Spring does bring them around, even here...

Dixie Chick,

We use "Pink Stuff" from the local feed store. Works great, smells good and works on people too. No seeums and skeeters hate it!

The vet dosage for diphenhydramine (benadryl) is 1-2 mg/lb/8hrs for dogs and cats. This is considerably MORE than the dose for children. If you're going to dose your dog, may as well give him/her enough to get the job done.

Pink stuff - deionized water, celearl alcohol, monosterate, glyceryal, D-limonene, oil of citronella, cedarwood and ecukyptus, lanolin methyl parben, FD&C Red #40. A non-pesticidial topical herbal oil protectant cream. WHEW - that's what the label says. Typos are mine.

Hey Dixie...

My left arm has been very itchy the past week. I wonder if it's something in the air?

Let me know what works for your pup so I can try it, too 😀

BTY...I was behind you this morning as you drove to work.

i saw you special K. good thing it wasnt this morning you were following me. i had a parade maker in front. he was going anywhere from 15-20 miles an hour. had cars backed up as far as you could see. i was starting to feel road rage.:X

ok for your arm. i put dog on a special diet starting tuesday. you have to eat brown rice mixed with either salmon or hamburger.
and brushed daily. also in case you have fleas, use a good flea shampoo and once a month flea treatment.

if this doesnt work then your next step is to visit the vet. let me know if this helps your arm.

have a nice easter!!!!

DC,
I was just at Kmart west, and they had one of those racks, with assorted items on sale. One of the items was an anti-itch spray for dogs. I had one of those "moments" like.... why does this sound familiar...? Wish I had logged on before going shopping. I would have picked some up for you. They only had about 4 bottles, and I couldn't tell you what it's called, but you might check it out. Good luck.

For temporary relief of human arm itching, try putting it under the hottest water you can stand (hot shower, or wet microwaved towel) for as long as you can stand. That should give you about 8 hours of relief. It works for poison ivy anyway.

Let us know how she's feeling -- poor girl.

For food, I can attest to the Royal Canin working well; it's a lower-priced competitor to Hill's Prescription Diet -- have had both dogs and cats on it over the years, for various reasons from urinary to ... well, general psychosis, shall we say.

Diphenhydramine (Benadryl brand name) does indeed work wonders for instantaneous relief if her reaction is allergic. Check with your vet before administering to make sure it won't interact with anything else she is taking/eating. Hopefully she just rolled in something and this goes away soon!!

This is exactly what I do for poison ivy. The itch is caused by histamines being released by your body. The hot water draws out the histamines and washes them away. Be carfeful, though, not to let the rinse water fall onto uncontaminated parts of your body or you could spread the infection. 😮

Histamines are what cause ones nose to itch in reaction to an allergy. Hence we take anti-histamines for a runny, itchy nose

For temporary relief of human arm itching, try putting it under the hottest water you can stand (hot shower, or wet microwaved towel) for as long as you can stand. That should give you about 8 hours of relief. It works for poison ivy anyway.

Hey Dixie! It seems to be working. The itch has gone away only now I have a craving for Milk Bones...the senior dog recipe! Or maybe some fresh kill chicken. You have chickens, don't you? 😀

FYI: Mango skin and sap have a chemical similar to urushiol (poison ivy's dermatitis-inducing agent) and mangoes are starting to fruit, so be advised. (BTDT/got the steroids)

jefferspets.com sells stuff for anti-itch --- works great. We also give the "kids" benadryl - the wannabees that are cheaper though. I get those from the states in large (400 pills per bottle) quantities.

chucks...LOL

If you take the first letter from ducks and the rest from chicks, then you'd be raising a bunch of...uh...hmmm...let's stay with chucks! 😀

Shave your pet’s hair on the infected part, and spray it on the infected part directly till the skin is slightly wet, 3-5 times a day for 5-7 days. Keep the skin slightly wet if possible. In order to achieve the best therapeutic effect, you’re recommended to use the itch spray for dogs in conjunction with vitamins.
