Help with Broadband speed test from STT and STJ

Would anyone be willing to perform a speed test for us so we know what to expect from STT and STJ? Our business is internet-based, so once we'd move, we'd depend upon speedy service. We don't expect it to be as fast as here in PA, but are hoping it's well fast enough.

The site to use would be:

http://www.speedtest.net
(We would be interested in results from clicking on the Jacksonville, FL and Washington, DC servers)

After the test, the results will give you three options to post your results. The third option look like this (this is mine today)...

If you could copy and paste your result in here, your Internet Provider, and which server you clicked on, I would be most appreciative. It's greatly important to us.
Thanks so much!

murf, can you do to Florida or DC? I get the same to DR, but to DC I get 10,000-20,000 kbps.
thank YOU! (i get 2,000 from curacao.. maybe that's better) I just know the DR server is snail slow so it won't give a fair estimate of available bandwidth.

eeee! :o))))
Would you say these speeds are typical? or is there "fast" service available as well? That would really put a hurtin' on my business.

[thanks for all the results, ronnie!]

This is jacksonville

I use Hughesnet Satellite on STX. This connection is a residential service for $69 a month. Higher speeds available.

SkysTheLimit,
That's not too bad. I think I could live with 1Mbps.
thanks for the post

I sell and service Hughesnet and Dishnetwork systems here on STX.
Let me know if I can help. The high ping time is due to inherent latency associated with satellite but these systems just work. Higher speeds available. This is residential pro service for $69 month.

not terrible. i think i could live with that. will satellite speeds be faster eventually? here we have Comcast and Verizon duking it out to be the first to offer 100Mbps. Comcast has 25Mbps and Verizon has 50Mbps now, so it won't be long. The thought of 1Mbps is a bit underwhelming but it's sure beats dialup!

SkysTheLimit - is the cost to install and the monthly cost for HughesNet the same in STX as what is listed on the HughesNet website?

Monthly costs with Sat TV or internet are the same as anywhere. You deal with a provider. Install costs reflect larger (required) dishes, shipping, and installation. Site survey usually required for a firm price but PM me if you want to discuss. Minimum, you'll want a 1 meter Hughes 7000 system. The true beauty is they always work and you are independent of island hicups. When WAPA goes down my UPS can keep me online for hrs. Crank the generator and you're all set. Satellite only requires 110 power to work. 🙂 Same systems you'll see the news stations using on their vans and you'll see them on tons of stores and service stations in the states for running CCs and staying connected. VERY reliable!

Rain fade vary's and depends on signal strength. Are you refering to TV or internet? TV will fade out before internet because of its circular polarity. What size is your dish?

I'm online now and it's pouring rain.

Also, I download roughly 155 GBytes per month (1.2 Terabits). It looks like some satellite customers are limited?

Most sat plans have limits. Hughes offers 1250MB per day download and 100MB up.
Other providers offer unlimited usage and the price goes up.
