Hello, Teresa and others looking a home schooling options,
I am looking at the possiblity of using some of our boats as "classrooms" for some home schooling options. Looking at the stars, plotting courses for sails, learning about the wind, etc. as part of home schooling for several of our yacht owners who home school thier children. If anyone is interested in exploring this with me, please let me know and we can see if this is something we can use this school season.

Hello Pamela,

Please keep me posted on this option. I love the idea and would love to be involved. We do not own a boat so i couldn't contribute in that way, but we do sail and I would like to have my kids learn a bit about it.

Side note: I love movies and a comedy had a captain throwing away a compass and saying that a true sailor only needs the stars to find his way. Another character asked, "but what if it is cloudy?" The captain gave a pirate type "Aarg". I don't know if I wrote that well, but it was funny. Might have been in the movie "Captain Ron" with Martin Short. Can't quite remember.

Okay it is late (the only time I can get online), and I am tired. Feel free to email me, I will follow up with an email to you tomorrow. Good ideas. Is there really a lot of kids living on boats or kids that are homeschooled that have parents with boats part-time?
Just curious.

Thanks,

Teresa

Hi,
I am moving to STX next week and have a five year old. My mother is coming with us and she has been a teacher in Belize for the past nine years (we are American). She is pursuing the option of maybe setting up some sort of home school center for five or so kids. Another option she was exploring was maybe teaching movement or theater arts to children who are being schooled at home. Please stay in contact with us as she is a fabulous teacher and will be schooling my daughter. Also, just moving to the island my little social butterfly will need to meet some kids to play with . Are there any type of play groups or anything like that? We would love to meet new friends.

I love the idea. Our daughter is only 2 1/2 right now. I hope we make the move before she is off school age. Yes please keep us posted.

Thanks

I can see geography, history, and social studies lessons about the Caribbean growing out of this.

That is what I was thinking - what a great way to learn those things. I am putting together a proposal for some of our boats and will present it at our Annual Meeting in November. In the meantime, if anyone has any ideas regarding curriculum, etc. please email me. By the Way, Former Ohio Guy, we do have a few boats on St. Croix as well ....
Pamela.

Hello,
We are moving our family to St. Croix in early January 2014. I am seriously considering home schooling my then 2nd grade son. Does anyone have any information about home schooling on the island?

jessica,

That was an extremely old post. 2004.
Here's a link to some newer ones and sure someone else will chime in about what they know about it in STX.
