(I must be slow this morning. Took me a few ticks before the smile began.)

The Prince knows how to spin. Reading his version of his DC meetings creates a carefully contrived image of him sitting down tete-a-tete with President Obama having a nice cozy first-name chat over a cup of tea with the White House pooch grinning at his side. Same sort of spin he created during the Bloomberg TV interview. Same spin which persuaded people to vote for him.

Yep - there was nothing on the president's schedule showing a meeting with Mapp. His capability to spin exceeds that of a whirling dervish.

At least the Daily News tried to verify Mapp's statements. Mapp seems to be the only one talking.

All we've ever heard is either Mapp's side of the story, or the other side (Coffelt) and Mapp remains silent.

I live in Kentucky and have a good working knowledge of McConnell. I doubt very much any such conversation ever took place. McConnell is far to careful to make any statements about Cuba. Plus, a detention facility on STX would have all of the constitutional problems they are trying to avoid. The disney idea has some merit, seeing as how the governor seems to be visiting fantasy land already.

I have to give credit to the governor for unconventional thinking. Moving the Guantanamo Bay base to STX would create 6,000 jobs. Just imagine how the "help wanted" section would look like in Daily News:

-- Pashto interpreters
-- Crucian interpreters
-- Carpenters for repairing the water-boarding equipment
-- Construction workers for the new desalination plant, to supply water to the water-boarding chambers
-- Correction officers with experience in Golden Grove and Abu Ghraib
-- Halal food preparers
-- Tourist guides to showcase the facilities
-- Soccer players to compete with the prisoners in the "play soccer, or play dead" spectacles
-- International tribunal lawyers
-- Grave diggers
-- Orange paint makers

Obama has recently pledged to close the prison facility at Guantanamo Bay before his term is over. The prospect of a naval base on STX is ONLY if the entire Guantanamo Bay facility pulls out from Cuba - which is NOT going to ever happen in my lifetime.

Maybe Mapp can call the people up that wanted to build the rocket launch pad at Great Pond years ago and see if they're still interested. Or maybe Michael Jackson's people about the amusement park he wanted to build on island and combine it with the Frederiksted water park?

On a serious note have mega fish farms and solar/wind R&D been nixed due to being locked up elsewhere?

Whatever they do it's going to have to include every business tax credit possible. STX needs mainland people to be living there so their friends and family can visit with a free place to stay and then spend their on island. Every time I visited it seemed I met 2 or 3 people who were staying with somebody that worked at Hess/Hovensa.

There were never plans to build a launch pad on STX.

Beal Aerospace was going to launch from Sombrero Island. Solid Rocket boosters were going to be built at Great Pond.

They ceased operations in 2000.
