How Much $ Is Enough?

My Husband and I are seriously considering moving to St Thomas. We are coming down for a pre-move visit In July and would like to be living there by August or beginning of September at the latest. What is a reasonable amount of money to move there with? I know each person is different. We want to be able to rent a furnished apartment for $1000k and under. We plan to ship a car there. I am planning on looking for work as a server/bartender. Do you think that $10,000 is enough to get us started? Do you think that we could come with less? Do we need a lot more?

Thanks so much for any input and advice.

Island Girl:

Suggest that you do a search on this board. Your question has been asked many times before.

Is $10K enough? Perhaps for some, but not for others.

For a "rule of thumb" recommend that you total your current living expenses (be honest, include everything - rent, utilities, insurance, gas, health care, clothing, food, etc...you get the picture) and increase that by 25%.

Hope this helps.

F.I.

Just to give an example. If you want to rent at $1,000 per month most landlords will want first, last, and one month's security deposit. That's $3,000 just to get the keys. Figure another 200-300 for utility deposits. And another 300 - 400 on things for the new place. You're up to close to $4,000 for a living space.

You still have to pay to get your car shipped and get it registered here, another $2,000 to $2,500.

$1,000 might do it, but you better start looking for a job ASAP.
