Hello all,
I'm sure this topic has been posted on here before but I do prefer to actually talk and interact with people rather than just read "stories".
I am inquiring as to relocating my entire life to Saint Thomas, Saint Croix area. I visited there a few years ago and it has never really left my mind. Of course, the first thing I'm wondering about is employment. I have always done construction/ carpentry/welding/maintenance work. Is there much of a job market for professional carpenters or craftsmen?
I've already read a ton on the ins and outs of living there, (without actually talking to someone about it) so any other personal insight you could give me about the whole relocation process to there would be great.
I have a big diesel truck i imagine I can't bring with me there (no where to park the big ass thing and probably just not practical at all). Plus, I remember the roads being smaller than they are here in TX.
I have a little dog that I will be bringing. Any special requirements for her shots before we move?
Any and all information and personal advice would be greatly appreciated and i really look forward to striking up a conversation with some of y'all!

You can check the airlines website about requirements for traveling with pets. There's also threads on this site if you do a search on link at top of page. You won't be able to bring your dog cargo in summer months, due to heat restrictions. You need a certificate from your veterinarian dated within 10 days of departure and required vaccinations, including RABIES.
There's a limit on how many animals they allow on any given flight and you cannot make a reservation for your dog. It's first come, first served basis, only.
Also no animals are transported on any AIRBUS plane in cargo so you need to make sure your reservation takes that into account.
Don't know if they allow in cabin. The airlines website will have info on size and kennel s required for dogs allowed to be transported in cabin.
AA is probably your best option for traveling with a dog in cargo or you'll have to fly private with a pet transportation airline. It's expensive even if a shared flight with others.
I am able to make a reservation for my dog but he is small enough to travel in the cabin in a carrier fitting under the seat in front. Just booked him on American and he gets his own record locator number, even. Delta puts him in their system as well for the cabin flight.
I shipped a lot of items down in boxes via the USPS when I moved and checked with a real estate agent to find a rental that would accept a dog. I got photos but was unable to visit it first and it worked out. Had to pay first & last month's rent plus security deposit. The MLS has rentals posted. That was over 10 years ago and I'm still here. I did have a job lined up in advance. My bank let me ship the car down still owing on it. Best wishes!

Your big diesel truck will be valuable here. The roads are so crappy, bigger is better.

Vicanuck, I agree with big diesel truck being an advantage on STX, but NOT on STT! Have some friends over there who downsized....way too tight with parking and road conditions on most places!
DanielMyers1985, once you decide which island, then you can make a better decision on your truck relocation (or not)!
Yea Stx for truck would be ok. For sure not stt. I too had a 8in lifted chev crew cab diesel. LOVED that damn truck, (also being a Texan) but omg driving that on STT I would have a heart attack. Not a problem in stx. Has the OP Brent to both islands? They're soooooooooooo different!!! I would start with a visit to both first.
