benner bay is the independent boat yard area. What we call the lagoon The water is dirty, all the live aboards dump right into the bay. You can not swim there or even see the bottom. It is close to food center, and about a mile from red hook . You should check it out in person before you buy

Some friends of ours decided to go back to live aboard their sail boat. They looked at Benner Bay/Compass Point Marina as well as Independent Boat Yard. Ultimately, they chose IBY. I understand IBY is a little less expensive and there's a little beach.....Happy Beach?...that's wonderful and vey close proximity that they truly enjoy.

Moving to STT, buying a houseboat sight unseen, trying to understand the complexity from answers on a forum is almost certainly a plan doomed to failure. During H-cane season alone -- living on a houseboat is a huge risk.
Visit, get some short term housing and get a good look around !st.

Darwin: I am not going to give you a thumbs up, because of "let the buyer beware," you know. The lagoon is where a lot of live-aboards are. It is where the Lagoonies live. It is a nation unto itself. It isn't the Ritz, but it has all the boat oriented businesses handy. The Food Center is close by,. You can dinghy to Cariga's for a greenie. It is on the safari route. I'd have a surevy done on any "houseboat" for sale, if I were you. 😉
