My husband is working for a company at Hovensa and I arrived a week ago. I love this island. I know that we will be here until March and hopefully longer. The people that I have encountered have been wonderful. The realtor that my husband used was most helpful when it came to finding a condo on short notice. The husband has already got his diving certification at the Cane Bay Dive Shop and the instructor, Judy, was great.

It has taken some getting use to driving on the left side of the road, but I think that I have mastered it. Intersections still kinda freak me out, but I seem to be getting better. I have proved that you can get lost on a small island, but I have now call my driving outings as "exploring adventures". For someone with no sense of direction, I have managed to make my way back to the condo. Even a trip to the grocery store is an adventure for me.

Would love to meet some of you islanders since I will be here for a while.

I'm glad you've had such a great first impression. My son and daughter in law are from Norman and plan to visit us next spring. I was worried that they might think it's too hot or too whatever and not enjoy visiting.

How long did it take to get dive certified at Cane Bay? I am asking for my brother in law since I have no big desire to do it myself. I think if I wasn't blind without my specks that I might consider it but if you can't see it's hard to imagine enjoying it.

Dear Okie What part of OK are you from? I was born and raised up at the edge of the panhandle in a town called Alva. I am going to arrive on sept. 8th for good and I hope to meet you and your hubby at the sept. get together on sept 14th at 6pm at the off the wall . Sharon: I know where norman is and have been there a few times. Usted to live in stillwater for a while. Okies are used to heat far exceeding what they will find on STX.

It is so much cooler here than it is in Oklahoma. Altho, we have had a really odd summer, a little cooler than usual for our state. At home there is no breeze at all, just humidity and 100 degree temps are the general rule.

My husband took a little Discover Suba course ( maybe 2 hrs) and found that he liked it, so then he took the regular course. I think he went out to Cane Bay 3 times to get his certification. 2 of those days, he spent nearly the whole day there.

I am also blind as a bat without my glasses, plus I have no desire to look up and see all of that water above me, so diving is not something that I care to do. I am content to look like a beached whale laying out on the beautiful beach. You know, cellulite looks much better tanned. Probably way too much information.

I am off to KMart. If you don't hear from me by tomorrow, send out a search party.

Phyl

John, my home is the far SE corner of the state. I am 8 miles from the Texas line and 34 miles from the Arkansas line. I have been thru Alva.

I won't be able to make the September get together. I am going home on September 12 to take care of some business, but will be back sometime in October. Except for a trip home for Christmas, (must be with the grandkids and kids at Christmas) I will be here until the end of March........maybe longer. I could really become accustomed to this island lifestyle.

BTW, don't let glasses keep you from snorkeling or diving! There are several alternatives:
1. If your distance sight isn't too bad, sometimes the magnification effect of water will allow you to use a regular mask,
2. If you wear contacts, you can wear your mask over them,
3. You can get a prescription mask!

You really should at least give snorkeling a try while you are here...It is very easy to float and look down at all the wonderful creatures! The water is incredibly beautiful- not at all like Lakes Texhoma, Eufaula, Murray, etc. BTW, you will find plenty of fellow Okies (and Texans, too! hah!) around...
