In a conundrum about PMV to STX

We are planning on moving BACK to STX in late November. My question is, for those who have experienced the PMV, how far in advance would be good idea to do the PMV? I've been looking and searching through houses for lease for some time now, but, cannot see anyone holding a rental until our move in late Nov early Dec.

I was thinking about coming down in late Oct perhaps to secure our rental for the afore mentioned time. I am available to come at any time as I am retired. My husband works from May through end of Oct and we just cannot make our move until after he returns to Akansas and we get our vehicles and pets to Florida. Do you see coming in Oct s aa good time for the PMV?

Thank you for your responses.

No homeowner will hold a rental for months unless you are willing to pay for those months in order to have available.
I have had people arrive and rent short term, then find a place long term after they have actually moved here.
They set up a short term rental of 1-2 months, in advance. Especially, in off season (even Oct./Nov and early Dec.)
you can probably find something for a couple months to rent while you look for something suitable for your needs, long term.
After that it will be more expensive for both long and short term.

We reserved a week in a hotel, rented a car and looked for an apartment after we arrived. It was 8 years ago, but it only took a couple of days til we found an apartment that we liked. Stayed there for a year and then found the perfect place for the rest of our stay.

This approach takes luck, cash (without a job landlord may as for additional month's rent) and a good additude.

In this rental climate on STX? You are probably fine.
We did similar to LindaJ and just stayed in a temp rental (vrbo.com) until we found a more permanent solution.

sounds like they will have pets...that could make a temp place a bit more difficult, but still doable, depending on size/type etc.

Don't wait too long. Once the official annoucement that the refinery is reopening is finally made, rentals will dry up in no time.

What makes you think this is going to happen?

Thanks for the answers. We do have a large dog...actually a small Standard Poodle and a cat. Poodle is 11 and slowing down fast! We were wanting something in the 2-3K range as a long-term rental. Tentatively working on coming the first week in Oct with a friend and without pets for a week for PMV. I will rent a car, no problem. I do believe my biggest obstacle will be finding a good rental that will allow my pets.

Since I will not have pets with me on PMV, I will probably just rent a condo from the last landlord we rented from in Dec - Jan this year. We are looking for at least a 3BR 2+BA, pool, view, definitely a bathtub and washer/dryer. for long-term rental. I don't work and husband works off island for 6 months out of the year and we have the cash, no problem.

You should have no problem finding a rental. Why not contact a STX Realtor and ask them to show you suitable rentals in your price range when you arrive in October? What is on the market presently, may not be available in October but if you work with a Realtor as your PMVapproaches, they should be able to narrow down your options for you without allot of running around on your own and line up the properties you might be interested in renting.

Alana33, that was my original plan and think it will give me the best options. Thinking in my price range, I shouldn't have too much trouble...but, then, we will see.
