I'm with Vicanuck! Head for Dr. Hess at the Island Animal Clinic and get some Ivermectin! Some of the vets don't agree with the treatment but as far as we are concerned, the ticks are infinitely more unhealthy and disgusting than the simple cure.

We also were here for about a week with 3 dogs a number of years ago and experienced an awful tick invasion! All of our dogs were bleeding from itching! The ivermectin cleared it up within a few weeks and we have not seen a tick since! We give the dogs a very small dose once a month.

Good luck and welcome!

Do these ticks affect people or just animals?

Mostly Dogs, horses, and cattle. If your dogs aren't treated they bring them in the house and they WILL attach to humans.

Afternoon,
Ticks are not only gross but transmit "tick fever"
The best bet is Advantix or Frontline.
Go to Deller, Hess or whatever clinic is close to you.
Dont waste your time or money with the over the counter stuff at Kmart or grocery store.
There are many breeds that dont tolerate ivermectin well, yes a bad reaction is unlikely, but if its your dog that is the
1 out of however many thousand it sucks!

ivermectin is absolute poison, just know that going in, but from what I gather, it really is the only thing that works. I had an awful problem with them on my dog and me.

Poision is not the proper description for the medicine, Dr. Jamison! 🙂

Ivermectin is a broad spectrum antiparasitic medicine primarily used to treat worms. Ivermectin is used in veterinary medicine and administered in combination with other medications to treat a broad spectrum of animal parasites.

Diatomaceous earth works great as a treatment for fleas and ticks. It is non toxic and suffocates/dries out the critter. Food grade DE is great to add to their food as well, helps with tapeworms that result from bug ingestion. Results in up to 72 hours after application.

To treat and control your surroundings, lawn and garden you can apply beneficial (parasitic) nematodes that attack fleas and ticks, as well as termites and Japanese beetles. Again, non-toxic! I would check with the local agricultural authority to identify the nematodes that are the most effective.

Good luck

I second, or third, Ivermectin for ticks. Dr. Hess @ Island Animal Clinic prescribed it for my 4 dogs. We were overrun with ticks...AWFUL. I tried everything from the drops from another animal clinic on island, tick collars, bathing & dipping....NOTHING WORKED until I started using Ivermectin. It will not poison the dog, if used as properly prescribed by your vet. IT WORKS! Period! I haven't had to use a tick collar or the drops on my dogs' neck since starting Ivermectin. I've been administering it for many years now and have not had a problem with any of my dogs getting sick from it. I'm glad I finally found a vet on STX who prescribed it and I am no longer throwing my money away on products that don't work. Consult your vet to find out which dog breeds do not tolerate the use of Ivermectin. It should only be administered under the guidance of your vet.

I have to agree with the poison idea. Not to say it shouldn't be used but be aware we put poisons into our bodies every day and most of them come directly from the drug companies.

Just a short list of side effects on commercials.....you could lose your bowels involuntarily :-o.....you could develope siezures.....hair loss....blindness....fatalities have been reported....on and on. It doesn't mean people shouldn't use them but we need to pick our poisons carefully!*-)

Oh yeah, I forgot one of the good ones....may cause an uncontrolable urge to gamble, uncontrolable urge for sexual activity...I forget the rest but I remembered the important ones. 😀

TamiP: I'm confused. Are you talking about the side effects of invermectin when used for treating humans? I don't think anybody's leaning towards that - just wanting to keep their dogs tick-free. :S

I was addressing the idea that just because a "medicine" is prescribed by a doctor...DVM or otherwise doesn't mean it's completely safe and some of us do consider a lot of medication poison. Chemotherapy is a terrific example. If you reread the thread, the post may become more clear.

I do use Ivermectin on some of my pets but I still think it's poison, unfortunately it's one of the only things that really works (like chemotherapy).

Not until jan 1st. Seems like forever from now but were selling everything and renting the house which all takes time.

No problem, my reading comprehension is pretty good and although I assumed you were going rather OT just wanted to confirm as ivermectin is used to treat worms in humans ...

That includes arsenic, aka, poison. 😎

The article says that it is NOT effective against ticks yet we have vets prescribing it for ticks. I used it for our big rotties and it seemed to work. They never had ticks however until we boarded them for a couple of weeks. We only used it one time and used the frontline for regular flea and tick control.
