I noticed an article published back in September regarding the possibility of Genesis Homes using part of the old VIALCO property as a factory.
Is that project showing noticeable progress? What are the odds of the project succeeding?

I work in the manufacturing business and am interested in moving to St Croix.

So far, I have found the oil refinery, the rum factory, and the yacht factory. Are there other manufacturers on the island that I may be overlooking?

Hello Corinthian,

Haven't heard any new news - anyone over on St. Croix heard or seen anything about this?

Islander-
I've been focusing the majority of my research on St Croix but at the same time I don't want to overlook manufacturers on STT.

Are there any factories on your island?

I saw some engineering consulting firms listed in the phone book... but no manufacturing outfits. ?

Thanks,
-Corinthian

Hello Corinthian,

There are no factories on St. Thomas or St. John. The biggest "factory" like environment would be maybe WAPA (the power plant). Perhaps you could consider the cement and rock quarry a "manufacturer" but in reality there is nothing comparable with the refinery on St. Croix.

First timer here, hope I'm not out of line....

what is the banking industry like in the VI's? I have been reading various stories on this website about the pro's and con's and haven't heard anything about banks but the long lines on Fridays. Is there Bank Of America or Bank One???

Thanks for the feedback!!

Not out of line at all. A search on the subject of "banks" will show that your question is one that comes up from time to time. I haven't been on island in a while, but unless there have been some really major changes there are no big name banks. All I know of are First Bank, Scotia Bank and Banco Popular. I think there might be one or two more that I don't know about, I'm not sure. They are all insured like stateside banks and have many other characteristics common to stateside banks, but as mentioned in other posts they do operate on "island time"...

Im interested also in work as a waiter/ server what is the industry like and do they often have openings? I have worked as a waiter for about 8 years and have bartended. Me and my wife have been talking about moving there for a long time we are both in our mid 30's and want something new. My wife has experience in retail sales and most of my experience is on boats and the restaurant/ resort business. Anyone that has info. or could point us in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

We are looking at St. Thomas or St. Croix, I know it is probably expensive but we are looking for the simple life. We want to find an area with lots of job opprotunities and a place where we can just kick back and relax. I have worked on fishing boats most of my adult life and also have about 10 years experience as a waiter/ bartender, not the greatest bartender though and my wife La Rue works in retail. We want to research and hear from people who live in that area. I appreciate any info. Thanks, Sean and La Rue

Hello Sean,

You can take a look at approximate cost of living on this site - just to give you an idea of what to expect. You will likely find more boat work on St. Thomas. Waiter work you could find on both islands - they both have lots of restaurants and hotels. Your wife in retail - St. Thomas gets lots of cruise ships so the stores in Havensight and Charlotte Amalie shopping areas do well, so your wife will have better luck on St. Thomas in terms of more possiable oppurtunities in my opinion.

Islander,

We have looked at cost of living, if someone came there with $10,000 could they find a place to live and a job with no problem, we are really serious about moving there. We want to have a simple life with warm temps. I have been to St. Thomas but its been about 15 years when I was 19 or 20. My wife has never lived in the tropics, I used to when I was growing up I lived in Venezuala on the Falcon Peninsula. We just want to have some connections before we come. So what do you do there? Anyways please let me know. My wife wants to know if you can give us an idea on the average salary of o waiter. We are watching the Today Show and Matt Lauer is in St. Thomas and Jimmy Buffet my favorite artist is there also. Thanks for all the info and stay in touch, my e-mail is seeeee@yahoo.com e-mail me.My wife wants to know what you think, we are both in our mid 30's and my wife wants to know if a couple can still save for retirement. Thanks, Sean
