I was going to post this under Drivers License but I didn't want to "hijack" someone elses posting.

Are International Drivers Licenses acceptable for driving on STT? Thanks in advance, Tim.Daly@yahoo.com

TJD123.
If that's the one that is issued by AAA, it must be accompanied by a state license.

You will need a local license if you become a resident. You must do this in 90 days.

I thought International DLs were for residents of foreign countries? That is, when we travel to Europe we use an IDL and when my hubby's family comes here they use IDLs. I don't think the treaty permits use of an IDL in your residence country. SInce the USVI is a territory of the US I don't think you can use it in conjunction with a license from one of the 50 US states and/or territories.

Onika,
AAA issues a document called an international Drivers identification document, They do not have the authority to issue a valid driver license. The Document only identifies that the individual is a licensed driver in his/her state. The driver must produce his/her Drivers license from the state or country that licensed them to drive. So if you don't have a state or foreign country issued drivers license, you have nothing.

Lizard, I agree with you.

My point was that, in the US, it is only to be used in conjunction with a foreign license, not one from a US state (if you are a US resident). I responded as such b/c it appeared the original poster was inquiring as to the feasability of bypassing the need to acquire a VI DL at all by using his/her stateside DL in conjunction with an IDL.

Make sense?

Onika,
The last sentence of your original post was a little confusing, because if you have a state side license the Int'l Drivers license becomes mute in the USVI. Now it makes sense!

Thanks for the feedback everyone. May I clear up the confusement caused by question? - I am from NY and understand that I will have to trade mine in for a USVI license. The question I am asking is on behalf of my fiance who is a polish citizen with a polish drivers license and an International drivers license. She is not allowed to drive in NY, but she is allowed to drive in Florida (and some other states). I was just wondering if USVI is similar to NY or FLA when it comes to accepting her IDL. Thanks again

She may have to take the test. As long as you move here you must get a locl license within three months.Yes, I know, some folks don't but it's the law!

If your Fiance is a polish Citizen with a green card she will be able to a get a USVI drivers license. If she is in the US with a Student Visa or Work Visa, all rules apply according to Visa Requirements. Fiance Status has no standing for the issuance of a drivers license.
