Internet Service: Dedicated IP Addresses

Hoping some tech-savvy residents might be able to tell me if any of the ISPs that serve St. Croix offer static IP addresses as an add-on to their broadband service.

I am very fortunate to be bringing my job with me when we relocate (am an Interent-based political activist who works for a social justice non-profit advocacy group), and need to get a dedicated IP address in order to get secure FTP access to our DC-based web server.

Does anyone know if this is available or should I start working on Plan B before I move?

Thanks to everyone who replies!

PH,

Unfortunately, the answer is no. Very few ISPs seem to offer static IP service, and those that do usually charge a premium of about $15/month on top of the monthly broadband subscription. In fact, I can't even get a dedicated IP address here in DC -- Verizon owns the phone lines and won't let Earthlink assign static IPs so Verizon can corner that market. Even then, Verizon only offers it as part of the small business package, which costs quite a bit more than what we would pay for basic broadband through any provider. Forutnately, I don't really need it here as I already have static IP addresses at my employer's office.

My buddy Eve,

I'm a giggling at Mark' s hee hees! I think PH may have already found the answer -- am doing my digging now.

Since Mark knows about this, what say we turn your new Breakfast Club into a cyber cafe and suites so all the short timers that stay there can be totally wired, too? PH could then skip dishwashing and be head of tech support.

Just thought...

Ackley Communications offers 1 static IP address to business customers free of charge. Additional IPs are $5/ea/month.

St. Croix is serviced by Ackley Communications, as is St. Thomas, St. John, and Water Island.

Best,

LR
