Hey folks,

You've seen a couple of my postings. I just want a rundown on a few things:

1. How far is the University from the Airport (how many minutes away)?

2. What businesses are near the University ? (Restuarants, Hotels, industries (ex: computers))

3. How far is the University (and airport) from Charlotte Amilee?

4. Could I find an apartment/room in Charlotte Amilee, if so whats the average rent?

5. Whats the average rent for an apartment near the University?

6 Finally, how far away is the University from the East End of the Island?

Hello Dave,

I'll try to be as simple as possiable 🙂

1. How far is the University from the Airport (how many minutes away)?
Driving along the main road from airport entrance to UVI entrance - maybe 3 minutes.

2. What businesses are near the University ? (Restuarants, Hotels, industries (ex: computers)
Near - within 10 minute drive, Emerald Beach Resort, Carib Beach resort, Island Beachcomber Resort, Island View Guest House (a little further), a furniture store, a laundry, a little convience store, a mechanic shop, a couple car rentals, gas station... then a little further but still near you have Nisky Center that has Subway, Computer Store, Radio Shack, Gov't Offices, Pharmacy, Dominos, Scotia Bank, Pearle Vision, various other stores, Auto Shop, Funeral Home, Medical Center a little further with dentist and doctors, Banco Popular... then once you pass this area you have Frenchtown and downtown Charlotte Amalie.

3. How far is the University (and airport) from Charlotte Amilee?
I'd say around 12-15 minutes, traffic would make it a bit longer.

4. Could I find an apartment/room in Charlotte Amilee, if so whats the average rent?
I don't know that there are very many apartments in Charlotte Amalie, Ronnie might be able to help with info about that.

5. Whats the average rent for an apartment near the University?
Anywhere from $600 and up depends on size. I'd quess $700-800 for an avg. one bedroom or small two bedroom. Had a friend living out that way in a large two bedroom for $800 and it was furnished but had a crazy long driveway - the driveway alone took 20 minutes to get to the main road.

6 Finally, how far away is the University from the East End of the Island?
Around a 40 minute drive in moderate moving traffic.

Islander

Thank you for all your help. Just a couple of questions for you,

One, what is the name of the computer store near the university?

Second, studio apartments, can they be found near the university?

Third, how far is the Flamboyant Manor from the University and in what direction (north, south, east, west??)?

Ronnie,

Islander says you would know about apartments in Charlotte Amalee, what does a studio/or a room go for ?

Thanks

Dave

Hello Dave,

Computer Store in Nisky Center is called Computer World www.computerworld.vi and they are right next to Radio Shack. Just a note - Computer World is a small store nothing like Best Buy or CompUSA.

Studio apartments close to UVI - Yes they will be up a steep hill or in a very developed valley area. Outside of the immediate area perhaps a 10-15 minute drive you can find more apartments - mostly uphill (which I mention in case you are without a car).

UVI is on the South-West End of the island and Flamboyant Manor is on the opposite end - so South-East End of the island. Driving time between the two maybe 30 minutes.

Thanks Islander,

to answer, I'm not shipping my car over here because its value is under a $1000.00 dollars.

I planning on flying down July 9th, taking a cab to the flammboyant manor then trying to find and apartment/job near the university. I asked about the computer store because I'm sure I can get a job at a PC Technician their.

Other than that computer store can you point me in the direction of some computer related companies.

Also, if you know anybody looking for roommates near the University let me know..

I'll first, securtiy, last if necessary.

Thanks,

Dave

Hello Dave,

Computer jobs are not abundant. You might see if the university has any work options in their computer dept. You might also look in the yellow pages for computer repair businesses and see about sending your resume - but keep in mind many of these are small operations, which incidently you could look into - having a small business where you repair computers and set up programs ect. for businesses (this often works on word of mouth, referals ect., might look into it). The yellow pages are at http://www.viphonebook.com

All the best.

Islander: I wonder if he means the bulletin board at UVI where you said you would post his "roommate wanted" ad?

Hello Dave,

There are no message boards like this one for jobs and resumes at this time.

In July finding an apartment should be easy. They may range from about $600 up to $800. I already have started getting reservations for mine for May thru August, so I suspect that this summer more people will be moving here, just like the winter!

Dave: I quite honestly would not set someone up with a roommate over the Internet. I also think you should contact folks when you get here about work. Most employers will want to see you, not just your resume. That is, of course, my very humble opinion.

East Ender,

thats understandable, I don't blame you one bit. I realize most employers want to see the person first. I just figured if I could fax a resume and maybe gets passed around.. who knows..????

Anyways,

Thanks

Hello Dave,

Unfortunately I won't be much help with your resume. If I knew who to give your resume to as far as computer related openings I would tell you so you could send it directly to them.

The room-mate ad offer still stands if you want to do that (e-mail a room-mate/apartment ad to me and I'll have it posted on the UVI bulletin boards so maybe other students with apartments can get in touch with you). You can send the resume to me if you like via e-mail and I will look at it, maybe have suggestions, but I am not able to assist as far as passing it around.
