I have been looking for work as a chef in stx for 2 weeks now with no luck. Me and my wife simply do not have the money to travel down before our move. Any advice on getting a job pre move would be most helpful, thank you.

I saw one opening on caribbean.craigslist.org the other day.

You can do it, but don't expect job security -- turnover in the restaurant industry here happens faster than your head can spin. Without a pre-move visit, you are taking your chances. Good luck to both of you!

I sent you a private message. You'll find that most restaurants won't hire from the states unless it's for a specific title.

I found my job through craigslist when I originally applied for a line cook position. They didn't want me initially, but 4 months later, the Exec. Chef spot opened up and I was called upon.

Good luck!

Try to save up as much money as you possibly can before you jump into this. If you've been following the boards, you probably already know that it's much more expensive to live here than most places in the states. To give you an example, my weekly grocery bill for a family of four averages over $200. Car insurance is 3 1/2 times what I paid State Farm. Rent is double what my mortgage was. Get the picture? If at all possible, I highly recommend a pre-move visit. Island life isn't for everybody. It's well worth a little up front money to avoid shipping your whole house down here (which is incredibly expensive, too) only to realize it's not what you thought it would be. Good luck in whatever you decide!
