Went to Off the Wall tonight and heard the following story:

According to Diana, the owner, she was visited today by a government official (sorry I don't know if it was police or ABC or whoever). This person said that, because of general noise complaints, no bar could have live music without a cabaret license. Diana said, ok, how do I get a cabaret license. And the official says - get this - you can apply, but you won't get one because the music area is not INSIDE, UNDER ROOF!!

Now tell me, how many venues that have live music are inclosed? Divi? Galleon? That's all I can think of. And what about Jump-up tonight? Will the police be handing out fines to the teen age steel pan bands?

St. Croix, you gotta love it.

I've seen the post of people on the North side complaining about music. I guess the bike and it's stereo will get me thrown under the jail .

It also sucked several years ago when noise complaints led to to the end of Midnite, Kurt and Banooba (then called "The Project") playing at Cane Bay for the full moon parties. And then shut the entire Cane Bay operation down...

Instead of putting the mobile police substation in the lot accross from Off The Wall as promised over 2 yrs ago, to help curb crime on the north shore, I guess the gov't or police decided to harrass Off The Wall business owner wtih some assanine statement about not being able to have music in an outside venue.

We live in Cane Bay and the only one who is most guilty of having loud music is Spratnet. When they have music on the beach it is so loud you can hear it a 1/2 mile away and most likely it drags on into the night well after 9pm., Off The Wall has music but it's usually not that loud and it's always cut off by 9pm. As for Spratnet or some locals who sometimes set up huge boom boxes on Cane Bay beach, they are the ones who are disturbing the peace with noise.

My understanding is that Off the Wall is not the only restaurant that has been contacted regarding live music. I believe Rumrunners received a citation last week.

I agree about Spratnet being way too loud. My biggest issue with the music out there is there will be multiple live music at Spratnet, Eat@Cane Bay, boom boxes, cars with loud music (vibrating) driving by. All at one time, it's just too much overload for me, particularly the two live musics within yards of each other. Another thing, even when Eat doesn't have live music, they still play the canned music while Spratnet is live. I would suggest turn it off. As a matter of fact, I did the last time we were there. Haven't been in a good while, so I don't really know if it's still that way.

On Friday and Saturday nights we can hear the incredibly loud music from the Goat Bar -which is 2 miles away down the valley on Midland Road.

It can go til 3 or 4 in the morning some days.

Probably not "live" music, however, therefore, okay with the music police. :-X

All this being said and snarked about, I do think many restaurants overdo the music.
I like to be able to hear and talk with the people I have gone out to dinner with, and quite frequently even at my favorite places, the live music is turned up too loud in too small of a space.

I love going to OTW, Eat @ Cane Bay, Rowdy Joe's and Spratnet for live music.
I do think they respect the neighbors by having it shut down by 10:00 PM.
What I hate is when Spratnet and Eat @ Cane Bay are having live music on Sunday and you are trying to listen from the beach then you have someone who drives up on the beach and plays there loud music that sounds like poop. Like I want to hear there distorted music coming from there crummy speakers. I hate that even when there is no live music. How would they like it if I cranked up some Heavy metal rock or maybe even classical? LOL!

I've been reading a lot of the "moving to vi" stories and experiences here on vimovingcenter, and these "new regulations" visits seem to come up pretty often. Think they are just trying to shake you down for a bribe? And how can you be sure these folks are visiting in an official capacity? Who passes these new regulations, and can you vote them out of office? Or at least see the official record of what's been voted for?

I'm actually looking to settle down somewhere outside the mainland to get away from all of the big brother and nanny laws that seem to be creeping in everywhere! Live and let live!

Unfortunately randomq, the USVI is one of those places that needs a few more rules, and more importantly, consistent reliable enforcement of said rules.

Rules I'd like to see:

1. Bottle deposit
2. If my car windows shake when you pull up next to me blasting music, it's against the law.
3. All intersections must have stop signs on at least 2 of the corners.
4. Cell phone and broadband providers are required to cover STX's northshore if they want to do business in the USVI.
5. 50% of Electricity must be generated by renewable resources by 2014.
6. I'm thinking....

Rules I'd like to see:

- Grocery prices on USVI may not be more than 30% higher than stateside prices, on average. It used to be that way, but now it's twice the stateprice prices.
- If you have a car accident, you must move your vehicle(s) to the side of the road if possible. You may not leave them in the middle of road and jam up traffic while you wait an hour for the police.
- Any web site that offers shipping to the 50 states must also offer shipping to USVI using USPS.
- DLCA must issue a business license within 1 week of applying, assuming the applicant has met all the necessary criteria. Last I heard, it takes months for even the simplest business license.

FYI - There is already a "bottle bill" and the money is funneled into VIWMA for their anti-litter and beautification programs.

If you are interested in recycling (on STX) you can attend the monthly meeting of the recycling association and get involved. This volunteer effort has made great strides. The next meeting is Tuesday night:

Where: AARP conference room, 93B Estate Diamond (just west of Sunny Isle in the same building as Vinney's and Johnny Mango's), 340-713-2002

Time: 5:30 - 6:30 Social Hour; 6:30 - 7:30 General Meeting & event planning.

We'll be planning for Ag fair, St. Pat's Day parade and the opening of the Recycle Center in March. Beer, wine, soft drinks and water will be available.

You know, that's nice, but for those of us who choose to extend our environmentally sound practice to using public transport rather than driving, it's impossible to participate in meetings that run past when the bus and taxi stop running.

Diana told me that the cop saos that as long as the music wasn't too loud or went late she should be ok. She intends to jeep having it.

i live in an area where on some nights we can hear the loud music clearly and in our back bedroom with both the bedroom tv and the living room tv on. it seems that where we live the sound carries very far. have always been able to hear the music from the golden rail . i think it just stinks that my listening to my tv/music needs to compete with something that is at least a mile away.
now i will say this, it does seem that it stops at an approriate time. but still sometimes it is just too much.

One person's music is another person's noise.

Where is it written any person has the right to make as much noise as one wants?

Robbing people shows a total disrespect for another persons right to be left alone.
How is noise that can be heard a mile away any different?

Why does any music have to be louder than a air hammer or a jet engine ?

What ever happened to the idea of quiet enjoyment of ones own home?

Doesn't your right to flail about with your fists stop at the end of my nose?

I think we are particularly aware on noise because we live such open air lives. I have no a/c, so our windows are always open. Our downstairs neighbor usually lives alone and is super quiet. Recently he's had a house guest. They have conversations, play music, watch TV, and we've really noticed the increase in noise. And they aren't being out of line, just normal stuff.

So maybe we have to expect more exterior noise than if we lived behind closed windows and doors. The question is how much is too much? Before Parrots Cove closed, I thought the music they played was totally over the line. I felt so sorry for the guests at Caravelle. But is Jack Peterson playing his sax until 9 pm at Off the Wall a nuisance to those up the hill? I don't know. But If only closed venues were allowed to have live music, there sure wouldn't be much live music on St. Croix
