Twice now I've been honked at while waiting to turn left in a left turn lane with a red left arrow. Aren't you supposed to stop until the arrow turns green? Or am I misunderstanding?

What about the "lefts" that aren't really "left", like at Golden Rock heading toward 70 on 703? It's really more of a "straight".

Yep, go left on red if no one is coming.
The only weird spot for that is what mgpilot mentioned.
I always feel so illegal when I run that straight!

It is illegal to turn left on a red arrow. Even the police do not know this. It is, however, in the driver's manual!!

You should feel illegal 'cause it is. There's no such thing as straight on red.

Same intersection - heading east and taking the left turn into C'sted. When I first moved to STX i was warned so many drivers blow through that left turn that I shouldn't even stop on red for fear of being rear ended. I've been honked at many times for even slowing down for that turn.

We have two new straight reds that are treated as lefts on red on the new project in Long Bay. Hopefully they will soon tell folks it is wrong.

Learn something new everyday!
When I first started driving, I found myself following the line of folks in front of me.
So, it's their fault not mine 😀

My understanding

Left on red = legal.
Left on red arrow = illegal.

Take the rules in most statesup north about right on red and reverse them.

Then ignore what I just said because everyone goes left on the red arrows if no one is coming and I've never seen this enforced. One of the things I like about the VI, we use stoplights to prevent accidents but we don't blindly let a machine prevent us from doing something that is clearly safe (like go left on a red when no one is coming). Actually, IME, on STX when the lights are out traffic flows better as people here just figure out how to make it work.

when i first moved here, I actually had a cop honk at me for stopping at the red-left signal in front of golden rock....that's when i knew for sure that all the stateside driving laws can just be thrown out the window...

They should really change that arrow to green and yellow. Half the time it's red, the lane coming out of town is turning and it's perfectly safe to turn. When we first moved I got honked at a time or two also.

HAhaa. Im kind of late but I just saw this. Why not comment 🙂 The only left that I will not take are the ones that have a sign next to then saying "No turn on Red". Obviously you can see it is because you have no way to tell if the road is really clear.

Ronnie~ where are two straights on red you mentioned at long bay? I can only think of one which would be in front of Pueblo at Mandela, where's the other?

What'd ya expect from a Driver's Ed class that teaches about "left angles".

Don't even get me started on the Cruzan Phonecall.

Not sure what this means but if I'd have to guess I'd say the phone call that never comes because no one EVER seems to call you back even when they promise they will!

What about the left at the light in TuTu when coming from Havensight to turn to go to Kmart, there is a red arrow there, can you make the left on a red arrow or do you have to wait, I would wait and get honked at, now I just do it?
