I have been reasearching at depth the pros and cons of the public schools. Alright betty, bring it on.

My children are well educated, and at this point intheir life, a dialect of absolute caribean would be well deserved..

What do you mean by a dialect of absolute Caribbean would be well deserved?

Sorry Molly, but you will have to explain what you mean. Do you mean that your kids are well-educated enough to handle a sub-standard school? One in which they will stand out like sore thumbs? If so, I suggest you delay any final action until you are actually on-island and can make a more informed decision.

Sorry everyone, I definitely was tired and over-traveled when I began this thread.

My specific point is, my husband and I will be relocating to STT for 6-12 weeks, possibly longer. I have done extensive research with our local stateside schools. They have been great. We felt that the best option for our children was to remain with their current curriculum through home schooling or with a tutor. I have posted on several boards looking for a tutor but have only received one response.

With all of that being said, I still felt that something was missing for my children's education. I hear how desperate the schools are for supplies and volunteers. My thought was, why not enroll my children in the local system with mom in tow. I can be the "kitchen lady", correct math papers, sweep halls, etc., and in the afternoons keep us current with our local schools. This way my children can meet and establish friendships, understand the Caribbean dialect of the English language, and hopefully I can be of some service to our local school.

I am a property owner in STT and we are looking at this as a PMV. If we do completely relocate and my children would be permanently transferring, I will enroll them in the best school, private or not, in the USVI.

Thanks for your patience for my vague thread. I don't think that my point came across in words as I meant.

Not sure if your asking a question or for advice. Personally I'd rather home school my kids then sweep halls. I think Teresa mentioned there is at least one decent public school on stt but the waiting list is extremely long.

So for the most part no the education system will most likely not be up to your stateside schools. I doubt what is missing from your child's education will be found here. If you want your child to have a world view travel or move abroad. Or get satellite TV and watch other countries newscasts. You are not going to get a world view at best you will get a Caribbean view which tends to be a bit isolated from the rest of the world IMO. People come here to escape, relax or retire from stateside, not usually to shake things up.

The school system can not provide all the education for your children anyways. I'm sure as a parent you already oversea their education and broaden their horizons. So is it really that you want to move here for your children or you just want to move here? Obviously you like it here a great deal, enough so to buy property and thats all good....well depending on how much they decide to raise the property taxes....still waiting for mine.

If you're going to be here for 6 or 8 weeks talk to as many parents as you can and I don't think you will find my opinions to be that different regarding the quality of the public schools.
