Live on a boat??

I was wondering, do people ever just live on a boat? My husband and I are planning on moving down in a few years and plan to buy a 50-60 foot sailboat and live on it. As for transportation we thought motor scooters would be a good idea. I am graduating as an RN in December 2003 and plan to pursue my masters as either a family nurse practicioner or psychiatric nurse practicioner.

My questions are:
Advice on living on a boat and where to dock?
Advice on motor scooters for transportation?
Advice on what is needed on the islands as far as types of nurse practicioners?

Thanks,
Kimberly

Kimberly: Lots of boaty people around! Most live on moorings in Elephant Bay, Red Hook, the Lagoon on St Thomas or Great Cruz Bay and Coral Bay on St John. It is a different kind of life style! As a nurse practioner, you ought to know that we have a neurosurgeon who just started, don't even have a neuro ICU (he's doing some limited surgery), so if you happen to need that after your motorscooter fall... Honestly, there are people who ride motor scooters, but I sure wouldn't advise it! I think you'd have more options with FNP. There is a small locked psychiatric unit, and a private adolescent psych unit. Other options for tx are not well funded.

Hi Kimberly: I have no knowledge about STT but I just wanted to let you know I am a psychiatric nurse practitioner in a private practice associated with an MD in Fl. If you have questions just ask. Deb

I'm interested in knowing why you don't recommend a scooter. I can see myself tooling around on a purple Vespa, with a helmet, and the sun on my back! Sounds like heaven to me!

I am beginning to lean more towards FNP or Acute Care NP. I just want to be able to help people!

Thanks for your reply!
Kimberly

Kimberly: Have you visited before? St Thomas is rather hilly. The roads are narrow and winding. They are in better shape now than in a long while, but still have more potholes than you want.Because it is the tropics, sudden rain showers can make to streets slick. Other drivers are not accustomed to watching for you. What are you going to do with your groceries? Do you want me to continue? 😉 Please think about tooling about in your closed Wrangler! (All that sun isn't good for you, anyway!)
