I read the info about living expenses in St. John and apt. rentals average cost. It seems that it would be a far cry for the average working class joe (w/family) to live there. Are there places that are reasonable priced (under $350,000) in St. John?

The short answer is no.

Hilary: St John is an island that is largely National Park (God bless you, Mr. Rockefeller) so housing is limited. Think of places like Aspen, Manhattan, or any of the other high end markets. You can peruse the MLS listings, but I think $500,000 is kinda the low end!

If $350,000 is your price range you're probably better off considering STT or STX. That amount will buy a VERY nice home on STX and still offer a laid-back lifestyle, or if you have employment on STJ you could buy something quite livable on STT and take the ferry to STJ like the other "working class Joes"...

there are still a few small 'residential' condo developments on the island, where [when they come up on the market], you can find the least expensive ways to get a turn-key property on st john. [pastory condos, selene's, serendip, may be a few more...]
other than that, your only option for those prices is to buy a cheap parcel of land and throw an airstream on it [a number of people on stj are doing that now ;)], as you plan and save for a real house...

good luck!
