Good morning...

I wish to purchase a 420# ASME vertical propane tank...ideally on STX, but if transport from STT or Puerto Rico is possible, I'll consider those options, too.

Thanks for any information on suppliers.

Gallows Bay Hardware.

I bought a 250 gallon direct bury horizontal tank there.

I have seen 150 gal upright tanks there as well as 500 gallon tanks.

The propane dealers on STX will tell you to go to Gallows Bay if you want to buy a tank.

Dredging this old discussion up to make a hopefully-useful point.

There are two types of propane tanks generally available: DOT-certified tanks and ASME-certified tanks.

DOT tanks are lighter and must be reinspected after 12 years from date of manufacture, and every 5 years thereafter.

ASME certified tanks are heavier and are certified for life.

Both cost roughly the same. A 420lb propane tank such as one might want to install for residential bulk propane delivery costs around $485 currently from a variety of vendors in the US, some offer free shipping within a reasonable radius. I'll be getting one for delivery to Paradise freight.

The upright tanks that Gallows Bay Hardware sells are 420lb thanks but they are only DOT certified, and are priced at $999. They seem to be selling fast and I wonder how many people know what they are getting themselves into.

If you can afford to wait a little while you will save money by buying an ASME tank from off-island and your home's value will reflect the higher quality installation, whereas a DOT tank will be a liability as those of you who use the tank-swap propane tanks for your grill already know.
