Forbes article on USVI crisis

The news is out there at a pretty high level now.. Not that it was a secret, but not good. I'm curious, why has Plaskett been silent on this?

She doesn't like to beg?

Once DJT finds out how much money the treasury actually dumps into the islands every year, I expect he'll trim that back significantly.

Hard times are ahead for GVI employees.

Nothing is ever going to change with the "good old boy network" and or Nepotism in the Virgin Islands unless the Feds come in and clean house top to bottom.. But since Washington itself is full of this kind of crap -- lots of luck.

More bad news on the financial front.

http://viconsortium.com/business/usvi-on-precipice-of-collapse-says-veteran-bond-market-reporter/

This was bound to happen. You can't continue to borrow from Peter to pay Paul, when Peter is broke. The VI is in for some rough times. Another news article had the vendor supplying school lunches, stop doing so because they haven't been paid.

The governor, Lt. governor, all senators, all the increased salary administrators brought in under Mapp and given immediate raises need their salaries reduced, immediately and Mapp needs to move his overly large behind out of the Ritz and fire half his family members who were hired to work in his administration.

I know several local businesses that have stopped supplying the GVI with goods and services, including my own, unless we get paid upfront.

Looks like gov has 7-10 days cash on hand. Unlikely that they can borrow more money. The end is near.

I honestly did not think it would be that rapid... haha

When the US government doesn't pass a budget, I don't go to work... will they do the same here?

Between a Rock and a Hard Place, Senate Acts on Sin Taxes

Was glad to read that someone said this:
"It is not possible that the private sector today can replace the $100 million a year the refinery was generating. ... At some point this government has to think about how to restructure. … At some point we need to acknowledge we can't afford the government we have," Dudley said.

It's a shame that they will never learn. Mapp said he hired around 1,400 + more workers. If the average pay was around $30,000, this equates to approximately 45 million a year. What were these jobs for? (besides his friends and family) They need to look at efficiencies and a way to reduce the gov't payroll first, then look at other revenue makers. Sad to see them succumb to Mapp without looking at controlling the gov't spending first.

Indeed. Fiscal irresponsibility , incompetence, and ineptitude reigns, especially when it comes to Mapp's spending and a legislature that takes $12 MILLION a year to support just to govern a little over 100,000 plus people!

Again, after clearing my throat, I agree with you on this 100%. I still hope that the bond market sees this, they still don't offer up the bonds so that they can clean house.

I looked at a very affluent town near me with a population of 124,000. I know you cannot compare it apples to apples, but they run on a little over 70 million. With their own police force, lot's of lawyers, doctors and sports figures living there and seem to be doing well. Again they don't have the DMV, IRS or whatever it is called there, other specific offices but by reducing the # of senators, staff and unnecessary jobs, I'm sure that shortfall can be made up quickly.

IF they would go that route but I doubt it.
Serious times call for serious measures but these self serving "leaders"
(and I use that term loosely) don't have the integrity to do the right thing and jeopardize their excessive paychecks, healthcare, retirement benefits and perks which costs taxpayers millions while not benefiting the community.

Are they reining in Mapp's spending? Has there been an outcry from our senators about money spent living at the Ritz, luxury hotels and travel for himself and his cronies, his rampant and flagrant nepotism, the purchase of luxury limos and 2 additional SUVS costing $250K? NO!

Unless the entire population of the VI gets together and starts marching and protesting, they're going to continue to pass the buck onto our already overburdened shoulders.

The VI has been on the bottom for a decade already...they just don't want to accept it.
