I am making final plans and will need to acquire private medical/health insurance as my current policy does not cover the USVI. What insurance company/broker can you recommend and how to rates compare? I am a healthy 56.
Thanks Diane

My wife and I are moving to STX next month and I have done some preliminary research on this subject as we will have to decide between obtaining private insurance or maintaining our current coverage through COBRA. I have talked with two insurance companies and both offer a plan called AMEDEX. The rate sheet that I have, which does not differentiate between women and men, has an annual premium of $2180 for a policy with a $500 deductible for someone between the ages of 55 to 59. The monthly rate is slightly higher at $203.47. For comparison, the rate for someone 45 to 49 is $1680 annually or $156.80 per month. They also offer plans with a $2000 deductible and a $5000 deductible (your annual premium would be $1744 or $1269 respectively). After the deductible is met, the plan will cover 80% of the approved charges for the first $5000, and then 100% thereafter. Although the rates through this plan are slightly lower for us than what our COBRA coverage will be, the AMEDEX plan does not offer prescrition drug coverage...

Can you give any company names? My husband and I will be living on St. John, did you talk to specific St. Croix companies?

Thanks!

I only talked with two STX companies, American Medical Plans (about a year ago) and Gotts and Associates (about a month ago). Both companies are local administrators for the Amedex Insurance Company. American Medical Plans also provided information on another insurance plan through Atlantic Southern Insurance, which offered a prescription drug plan. However, the rates were about double those of Amedex.

Cici: There are a very few companies licensed to sell health insurance in the VI. Check with an insurance company like Tunnick or TOPA to find out about your choices.
