Moving to St. John: housing Qs

Hi! My name is Jen and I am planning on moving to St. John with my boyfriend and 2 cats in October. I know it is still 7 months away, but ive been searching websites looking for long term housing and have not had much luck. We've lived on islands before so we know how hard it can be, but i was wondering if any one could give me some advice or connections? Also are most villa rentals ok with cats?

My other question is that my boyfreind is a chef, so usually he doesnt have much of a problem finding a job, but is the call for line cooks/sous chefs/chefs high on the island? Or will he have to commute to St. Thomas?
Also, are there veterinarians on St. John, or do i have to take the cats to St. Thomas for check-ups?

Really any information you have is helpful and much appreciated 🙂
Thank you!
Jen&Jason

can't answer the chef questions for you, however, Dr. Laura is based on St. Jonh & is a very good vet.

Hi

I used to live on St. John and had the same stressors about finding a place to live and a job, etc before I moved (I lived there from Sept. 03 - June 04). Regarding long-term housing, you probably wont find anything before you arrive, and if you do, unless you can get good pictures, an exact location, and lots of details, you should be careful (or you arent picky and would live anywhere). I would plan on staying in a hotel or camping out when you arrive. Assuming you move this October you shouldnt have too much of a problem finding a place to live (although other people will tell you differently). It took me 2 days to find a place. The best place to find info on where to live: check out the message board at Connections in Cruz Bay or Coral Bay or at the Starfish market. Regarding finding a job, your boyfriend shouldnt have much trouble. There are alot of fine dining restaurants on island, and alot of great chefs. I would have your boyfriend call any of the restaurants on island, and see what they say. Send me an email if you have any other questions.

Thanks, Pete

Jen and Jason-
See you in October! I'll be moving to STJ on September 13th. Have you been there before? I have a good friend that lived there for two years and I spent quite a bit of time down there during that period.
Just wanted to say "Hi" from one future STJ'ian to another!

Hi Jodi!

We've actually never been there before! We're going totally blind..except for all the travel books! We did live on Maui for almost 4 years and really miss island life. STJ is a lot closer to home too which is nice (we're from the East Coast). And we especially can't wait to get out of California!

See you in October 🙂

Jen
