My boyfriend and I are moving to St. Thomas in August. We are wondering if we should ship my 1997 Ford Ranger truck. Is it worth it, or should we buy a car there? We are concerned with shipping prices, taxes, etc... Anyone know a reliable, shipping company?--we can spend roughly $1000 give or take. Any advice or encouragement is welcome as this is a pretty spontaneous move-- my boyfriend has never been to STT. Thanks!

Also, we will be looking for an apartment if anyone knows of a 1-2 br. vacancy around August 22. Thanks!

Hello Maverickelly,

I posted a while back about our costs of shipping our truck. I don't think $1,000 will cover it, but I have been wrong before. 🙂 Here was my cost - it should help you figure your costs:

$900/shipping
$350/brokerage fees (we hired them to take care of everything and deliver truck to us - we didn't want to deal with customs nor the DMV)
$701.76/road tax ($.16 per pound - our truck weighed 4,386 pounds - the weight should be easily obtainable thru the dealer)
$991/personal use tax (4% of the value of the car - not what you pay for it - I think they use Kelly Blue Book value)
$130/DMV title and registration fee

We used Lee at Managed Freight for shipping our truck, and his contact info is at www.managedfreight.com There is also Tropical Shipping (which is the company that Lee used for shipping our truck) He is great to work with and I recommend him.

If the cost is too much, you can find a used or new truck down here. The costs are relatively higher than the mainland for new or used, but shipping can be very expensive so it is your call. Good luck with everything!

Teresa

Thanks for your response, Teresa! Whew! That is A LOT more than we expected ;-). Lots of other fees-- and I thought Southern California was expensive. Just curious...roughly what is the average cost for a mid-range/reliable used car?

Actually, on second thought, and after reading the archives-- I have learned a great deal about the car situation. We're selling the car, throwing caution to the wind and moving. SOOO excited and cannot wait to return to an island time mentality.
