Moving to STT - Help!

Moving to STT sometime around January - with family. My wife accepted a job and we are beginning to make plans for the move. I have several questions and have searched previous post, but only find general answers.

1 - I will be looking for a job and would like to start sending my resume to prospective companies. I have a very broad background in management with excellent computer skills, especially in database creation and management. I have worked as retail manager, plant manager for manufacturing, assistant executive officer for overseas U.S. Government agency, senior purchaser/buyer, production planner (scheduler), and currently Risk Manager. I could use help in obtaining contact information in order to schedule job interviews, informal (informational) interviews, or networking. Is there a list of companies/manufacturers in STT? Are there employment/staffing companies in the area?

2 - We are interested in loading our household goods and furniture into a 40 ft container and shipping from the Washington DC area. How do we begin this process? Do companies rent and ship the containers? Has anyone moved from the DC area and done this?

3 - I saw several post that mentioned softball teams. Does anyone have specific information? Is there a softball league? Also, saw several posting on fishing. Does anyone do any recreational fishing - fly fishing for bone-fish or tarpon? Are there areas around STT that are good fishing spots for these fish?

I appreciate any help and look forward to beginning an exciting new chapter in my life in STT.

Michael

Hi Michael.

You can check the local phone book for employment/staffing companies viphonebook.com You may get lucky but will probably find that you need to be on island for them to take you seriously. Most networking here requires face time and frequently the better jobs are advertised word-of-mouth so you may have to settle for an interim job until you meet people and hear of something better. You will also likely find that experience matters more than education. For a list of companies in STT you might try the Camber of Commerce http://www.usvichamber.com/ Also, if the kind of work you do is more common among companies that are EDC beneficiaries, you wouldn't qualify for those jobs until you meet the residency requirement which I believe is one year of full-time residence before hiring. If you don't know what I mean by EDC, here's a link to some information: http://tinyurl.com/878be

Most national movers in your local phone book can arrange container moves from DC to STT. The movers arrange for a shipper to bring a container to your residence and send local folks to pack and load your belongings. If your residence cannot accommodate a container the local folks will pack your belongings and shuttle them someplace that can accommodate a container, often the moving company's local depot. You can call some local movers and they'll come to your house and explain everything and give you estimates.

I don't play softball or fish so I can't help you there.

Good Luck with your move!

Thanks dntw8up. I am planning a pre-move visit the last week of October. Thought I would try to get my name out before then to schedule face-to-face meetings for that week.

I appreciate your quick response.

Michael: Softball and baseball leagues abound. Folks are very serious about baseball here. Many of the leagues are comprised of teams from various territorial government agencies, but you will be able to find a spot if you show an interest.

There is a guy who does snook and bonefishing charters- http://www.southof20.com/

And about work- There are no manufacturing companies on St Thomas. You might find something with an EDC company, although you may find out initially that you are overqualified.
