Plan 8

It appears from an article in the St.Thomas source, that Plan 8 (plans for the construction of a highway around the ocean side of the Legislature) is going forward, to provide better traffic flow through "the corridor" !

http://www.onepaper.com/stthomasvi/?v=d&i=&s=News:Local&p=1153543492

One of the seemingly positive reasons for acceptance of the plan was to eliminate the traffic passing by Fort Christian to eliminate the deterioration caused by traffic vibration (same was true in Rone, around the Forum I believe). And it further notes that without the road seperating the two important buildings the Fort and the Legislature, that they would thus be "joined" in one road free area.

I know in Chicago, that our Lake Shore Drive was recently re-routed around the football stadium for several reasons, but vibration/deterioration were one that was mentioned, as well as including the stadium and a Museum and the Aquarium in one plot of land without a road dissecting them. In Chicago it seemed a good idea. It did NOT however, necessitate changing the lake front by filling in some of it.

On STT however, it looks like the ocean will need to be filled in to accommodate this new highway!

Something surely needs to be done about the clogged up traffic, but is this really the solution!? How about the proposed setting up of taxi stops instead of having them driving around calling out - "back to the ship". The taxi's would que up and tourists could easily see where to go to get back to Havensight.

If this project is anything like the "Christiansted By-Pass", 20 or more years could pass before any action gets taken!

Dear Island Paul,

Once again the V.I. Government has forged ahead making preparations for an asinine project that has been sitting on the shelf for many years and was criticized from the get-go. Fortunately the dredge barge is only out there gathering "samples" for now. All the public input and permitting will, as bnk1227 says, probably take years but again this is a total waste of government money. No doubt the Honorable Charles Turnbull aims to maybe perhaps have this atrocity (if ever built) eventually named, "Charles W. Turnbull Highway..." Snicker not - stranger things have happened!

If you read the St Thomas Source Open Forum you already know my opinion about - duh! - WATER TAXIS! (And much else, of course.)

Then they wonder why I get so feisty. Living here for so long can either totally quell one's spirit or spur one on to continually throw in the jabs and I prefer the latter rather than the former. But, as you know, dear Island Paul, I do both offer solutions and work towards change rather than simply tossing out kvetches!

Cheers!
