@ JoeyBallGame

3rd world???!!! Have you lived in an actual 3rd world country???

Why don't you move to some parts of Africa that is experiencing famine and living in refuge camps??? Now that is 3rd world!!!

Or join the Peace Corps. Then they might send you to a 3rd world country to help the country with building water wells in villages so they don't have to walk miles & miles to get water. Or help them grow food so they don't go hungry, because there are no grocery stores to pick up some veggies at their leisure.

So, go to the beach with a drink in your hand and hang out the Caribbean Saloon watching your football games and be thankful for what you have. Because the people that actually live in a 3rd world country don't have those luxuries.

I just hope you were being sarcastic, but it isn't the first time I heard it. I do not like that reference.

JoeyBallgame, no. Move to Haiti and then come back and tell us again that the USVI is the Third World. Compared to Third World living standards, we are in fantastic shape on many fronts. But, our lovely territory is not First World, either.

I like to say "Second World" and people get what I mean. 🙂

Good news everybody. I looked it up, and strictly speaking, the USVI is First World!
First World = aligned with capitalism and NATO
Second World = aligned with communism and the Soviet Union
Third World = everybody else

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Third_World

"The term Third World arose during the Cold War to define countries that remained non-aligned with either capitalism and NATO (which along with its allies represented the First World), or communism and the Soviet Union (which along with its allies represented the Second World). This definition provided a way of broadly categorizing the nations of the Earth into three groups based on social, political, and economic divisions."

"French demographer, anthropologist and historian Alfred Sauvy, in an article published in the French magazine L'Observateur, August 14, 1952, coined the term Third World, referring to countries that were unaligned with either the Communist Soviet bloc or the Capitalist NATO bloc during the Cold War. His usage was a reference to the Third Estate, the commoners of France who, before and during the French Revolution, opposed priests and nobles, who composed the First Estate and Second Estate, respectively. Sauvy wrote, "Like the third estate, the Third World is nothing, and wants to be something." He conveyed the concept of political non-alignment with either the capitalist or communist bloc."

Sure, we're technically First World. Just like we're technically Americans, but we don't get to vote for our commander in chief.... *-)

Give the guy a break. He just moved here and the reality of the islands is often a little jarring after the honeymoon.

Linda J wrote - "An ex patriot is a person who lives permanently outside his/her own country,... "

FYI - the term Ex-Pat refers to EXPATRIATE not EX-PATRIOT.

Beachcomber: Yes, sarcasm does not come across too well on the Internet.....

If I truly thought it was 3rd world, I never would have moved here & then after moving decided to stay.

There are many things different here than back in the States.....which I like......there are others that I don't. Some of those being WAPA, getting US company's to ship here, applying for an American Airlines credit card (as they are the main airline in & out of here) & being told my zip code does not exist.

Anyone who thinks this is the US, is truly fooling themselves. Police, Schools, Electric, Cable.....the way they are run here would not even come close to flying in the US.

I like living here. I haven't had a tv since I moved here, I lost weight since moving down, & I've met some really cool people.

Question for ya......are the Virgin Islands still considered a US territory in 10 years? How about 20 years? How long do you think, if ever, it will take the US Govt to wash it's hands of us here?

And, if I can't enjoy drinks in the water on a beautiful day or head to a bar that is PACKED TO THE GILS with College Football Fans on a Saturday afternoon, why did I ever leave Detroit in the 1st place? (this one is more rhetorical)

Joey: One piece of advice I always give newcomers is to keep your eyes open and your mouth shut. Observe but don't comment. I know this goes against the grain of young bucks like you, but seriously, it works.;)

Will do EastEnder.....but, I really am enjoying my time here. It's a different way of life, & that's just what I needed to help me realize what is & isn't important in my life.

Cheers!

I have traveled to St. Croix as a young female (30 yrs) completely alone for vacation. I fell in love with the island and I plan on moving there within the next few months. I can say through my experience that I did not run into any trouble while I was there, and I found the locals very friendly and helpful. I met a lot of good people while I was there. I would just say to use common sense...ANYWHERE you go...not just in the USVI.
