Hi,
I am graduating from Michigan State Universtiy in December in Advertising with a specialization in Public Relations. Before I join the real world I would like to travel a bit but I need to make money too. My oldest sister was married on St. Thomas in 2000 and I would love to work there come this January. I have tons of experience serving and think that that would be most up my alley. So basically I am looking for a restaurant/bar job and a cheap place to stay/ find roommates that are fun. Can’t wait for a change of scenery thanks for everyone’s help- Crystal

Hello,
I'm in the same boat with you!! Just getting started trying to find people who are headed to St. Thomas. I'm leaving Wisconsin some time in late December. I've been watching this board for a while now. Lot's of good advice. I'm interested in finding a few people who are going down around the same time to get started! As I mentioned, I'm just getting started, curious to know what, if any kind of plans you may have....

Sean,
I would be interested in working with you, and or anybody else moving to St. Thomas in the near future. I have been researching different ideas...obviously alot to absorb. I want to jump right in with the advice I've read on this board. At the same time I'm still a little on the fence as to making any hugh commitments to early. That is I don't want to get into a lengthy lease right off the bat. I don't want to ship a car there right away. And I don't want to get down there not knowing a sole. What I'm hoping to do is find a few people heading down around the same time...mid december....to work off from...Possibly share an apartement the first month??? Possibly share a car??? And anything else we may be able to benifit from....I've been paying close attention to other posts on this board...I guess at this point this has been my only source of info...I'd be interested to hear what you have planned....

Hey youse guys,
I'm not there but will be, someday. If you've been reading older post you'll discover, not only lots of free advice but the reality that if you: a) have a few grand in your pocket when you arrive, b) pick up an Island Trader (out on Thursdays), and c) stay in a cheap hotel for a few days while you go through it you may come out with a job and place to stay.
Good luck.

hi everyone,
yeah! i am so excited. i think i am not going down to after the holidays (i have got to say goodbye to the fam and friends before i head out or i will be dead - and hopefully will be getting some much needed cash from santa) 😉 so i was thinking jan 5th-ish depending on when i can get the best flight but i love the possibility of going down with someone else in the same boat as me who is just ready for a change and wants to do something different than all her friends. any-who i am intrested and have an acquaintance down there already so that helps. keep writing and maybe we can all help each other out and have a great time- Crystal

also guys- i know a ton of people who have done this before and depending on how long you plan to stay etc. they have different advice. i think we should all get to know each other a little before we continue on with this and see if we click..i mean we can still help each other if we don't but if we are talking about possible roommates etc. maybe we should now what type of time we are planning in paradise. what do you guys think? keep me posted 😉 - Chrissy
p.s. feel free to g-mail or email me if you don't want to post stuff like that on the boards and your down for it.
p.p.s. are you guys on facebook?

sounds great Crystal it would be great to get to know a few people before just jumping in. Marty ,who post's here quite frequently , has been a great help and seems like a great person , as well as the rest I have seen and communicated with . He seems to have all the info a person could need and the island hospitality that goes with

Crystal, Sean, Av8or, etc.

I've been reading your posts, and am also in the same position as you guys. I will be moving down December 1, and have a place to stay for the first month. In that time I was hoping to find a more permanent place to live, find a job, figure out transportation, etc. I am definately interested in meeting anyone knew to the island, and finding someone to live with at the beginning. Feel free to email me, however once I am down there December 1 not sure how often i will have access. email address is patricksullivan11@yahoo.com.

Hi there! I'm heading down to St Thomas mid-January. I'll be coming down with a travel nursing company to work in the hospital on the island. So, fortunately, I do not have to worry about housing, but I do need to get a rental car, phone, etc. I was there for three months two years ago and have wanted to go back ever since. I would LOVE to be able to meet up with people who are also new to the island. I have a few favorite places already and would be able to show you around as best I can. There's so much to do there.....but I agree it's best to meet/make friends to help the adjustment process. Let me know if you'd like to chat via regular email.

Good luck with the planning!

Renee

Sean, tried sending you an email over the weekend, but it got bounced back from AOL, something about a fatal error (whatever that means).

Hey.... Apparently there are quite alot of us who stumbled across this site in the search of finding more information on moving down to the Virgin Islands.... It is something I have wanted to do for such a long time and think that now that i am graduating from the University of Colorado this semester I think it would be ideal to move down to the VI asap. As somebody who has spent close to 8 weeks there over the past few years i know much of the islands and how to get around. Especially St. Thomas. However, i have to conquer finding and securing a job. If anyone has stumbled across some good info there then send me an email at matthew.garvey@colorado.edu... anything would be greatly appreciated. .... any hints or anything at all.... i have been looking in to the apartments at Sapphire Beach as a sweet place to live it up. I know a few people who have lived there and they say it was awesome and basically like a haven for people from the states between the ages of 19 and 24..... anyways, need any info possible so i can tackle this next level of commitment.... hope to hear from ya

Hey everybody
I just moved to STT at the end of october.....so i have one more set of opinions that i'd be happy to share with you. i am a little concerned that you're coming december/january b/c high season should be in full swing from what i hear...and the search for an apartment will most likely be a lot harder.
Right now restaurant jobs are plentiful if you're planning on serving ( like me) , hopefully they will be when you all come down too....

I stayed at the Mafolie Hotel on the northside for a week, they offer weekly rates.

I found an apartment in Frenchman's Bay about a week ago and am currently searching for a car....

if you have any questions please do email me, i have a fresh opinion and i was in the same exact place as you all are!

whatever you do, do NOT get discouraged. or...don't let it get to you....it may take a little longer than you expected but it will all work out with time and a really solid effort.

good luck!!!!

Hey Patrick-
I used to live at the Villa Fairview!! It's a great place to meet people. There are usually a good number of stateside people in their early to mid 20s residing there. People generally don't stay there long, as it is more of a hotel-ish living situation than an apt. If you have seen the pictures on the website, I just want to warn you that it looks nicer online than it does in person, but is still an absolutely beautiful building with a great view and a pool. It is also in walking distance to town which was my favorite part. FYI: If you need something done in the apt, for example plumbing, fixed screens, etc. make sure you get on Ronnie about it. He is a good guy, but often only gets to things when you call him everyday. Good luck and email me any questions!

Ann, thanks for the information. I'm hoping to find a permanent place during December, so I'll only be at Villa Fairview for the month.

I am in a similair position as Matt, although not as permanent. I am interested in living in St. Thomas for the summer while hopefully taking some summer classes. I am currently a sophomore at George Washington University in DC and I am very curious to find out how succesful I might be at securing a job and housing for the months of may-August. I have spent a large amount of time in the Bahamas and am in love with caribbean. However, it is not really possible to work in the bahamas as an American and St. Thomas sounds like the next best thing. If anyone could tell me about what would be going on during those months for a 20 year old like me and any concerns I should have or helpful hints I would appreciate it ENORMOUSLY!
thanks!
-Patricia

That is the slower season here. Finding an apartment is easier, a job harder. But doable.

Looking to purchase a small business in St. John. Prefer service oriented business.
Will consider small bar or restaurant. Ready to re-locate from San Francisco around
April or May 2005. Please e-mail if you have a lead. Thanks Azad

Hello to you all,

I just happen to find this sight today...I'm actually in a similar predicament as you all... i have a job offer...starting ASAP in Dec... i was going to move to CA, but now i'm considering coming down because i want to check it out before i get myself into something i'm not sure of. I am also from Michigan. If anyone has some advice for me i'd appreciate it!! I'm looking for a flight dec 2-5 , but they seem to be very very pricy and i wont be reimbursed unless i accept this job. I am a single female, and don't know anyone in St Thomas, so i'd really appreciate advice on cost of living, safety, how to move my stuff, etc etc.... Thanks in advance!!!!
