How exspensive is a brand new car? Will it be cheaper to buy it in FL and then ship it over?

Cheaper to buy it here vs. in FL and then shipping it.

Hello Ann,

You might find the same car here is priced say 10-15% higher then it is in an auto lot in FL, and if its a popular car the mark up might be a little more.

Now to ship a car here you will incur cost of shipping, road tax (16 cents per pound), personal tax (Value of the Car minus $1000 times 4%), if its not US made then import tax (3.5% of the Book Value or the Bill of Sale which ever is greater)... it adds up. So the difference between buying a car there and shipping it and buying it here might not be a difference at all when you consider the expenditures of shipping it in.

You might do some comparison shopping. Check out

...give them a call and get some prices on cars you might be interested in and then check out the same cars around where you live & then do the math and see if there is any incentive in shipping.

Also it is not as easy or at least as quick to get a car serviced here as it is stateside. If you don't buy your car on island the local dealer probably isn't going to bend over backwards to take care of you.

In December when I called the local GM dealer for service I was told the next available appointment was in six weeks .

Just a thought to keep in mind if you will need any warranty work on your new car.

Jim,
That seems like a good valid reason to buy a used car on the Island.
Thanks
