New Here (soon to be there) ... Car/Job Info Needed

Hello All,

I echo the many thanks given by those who've utilized this board for their move. I'll be on my way soon to. No PMV, just my flip flops and a good attitude that I'm confident will be welcomed among what seems to be so many fun loving people. I look forward to making STT a home soon.

I have read most of what has been offered and still have a couple questions and would also like to ask for any assistance that could be offered. Any help is greatly appreciated.

The Car? Still not certain about what to do here. I have a 2006 Acura RSX with 14000 mi on it. Is this the type of vehicle that is sought after there if I wanted to sell it and recoup the cost of shipping? If not, would a 1990 Nissan Pathfinder 4x4 with 170,000 mi be worth the expense of bringing (around $2000)? I find it more than coincidental that car prices for dealers in the USVI's cannot be found on the internet. Makes it tough to learn the market there.

Jobs - Restaurants? Luckily I've spent a number of years as a waiter at some really great restaurants and have a ton of excellent experience. I am going to apply for some server/bartender/manager jobs, in addition to applying for professional-type positions. Any leads on good opportunities for servers or managers? Where should I apply first? Any local favorites that don't see much of the off season? I know there are probably a lot of options, but I do want to be in a good environment. Perhaps somewhere that needs help getting their front of the house in order?

Jobs - Legal? I have been to law school and anticipate taking the bar exam there this February. Ultimately, I would like to practice law, unless a great restaurant job comes around. I've have several years of experience in the legal field, mostly as a law clerk / paralegal. Any guidance or help in this regard would be fantastic. When first researching the job market there, I was surprised to see that of the few dozen job ads that I saw, two were for attorneys. Do you really need a couple more there?

Any advice or caveats for a single guy in his 30's who will be moving there?

Thanks again for any help!

Did I read correctly that you're going to practice law "unless a great restaurant job comes along?" There's no shortage of attorneys but most seem to do OK but I don't see many wearing flip-flops.

Can't help with the car question. It's off-season now so there aren't as many restaurant jobs now as there will be a bit closer to season.

I think to get a car shipped and all the road tax and all the car must be at least a 95 or newer.

Why the 95 or newer? I shipped a 87 Bronco II last year with no problems.

Essentially my question is ... what would something like a 90' Pathfinder 4x4 be worth there? At least the $3000 I would have invested once it's there? It seems like an Island Car might be a gamble and I've seen soo much disparity in the prices for these cars. I guess if someone absolutely had to get rid of one, you might luck out and get a good deal? Otherwise, you're kinda in an inferior bargaining position and have limited choices?

There are an abundance of used vehicles for sale here so buyers are unlikely to opt for a vehicle with 170,000 miles which means you would be unlikely to recoup your shipping costs on the 1990 Nissan Pathfinder.

Good deals can be had on many (not all) used cars here mainly because many people move back to the mainland. Not all are beat-up wrecks if the owner has taken good care of the car. There can be much more disparity in 2 8-10 year old cars for that reason so there will also be a big difference in price between the two.

I wouldn't bother bringing the 1997 with that much mileage, personally. I could be wrong but I don't think it would be worth it. Good luck, whatever you decide.

Interesting opinions about the cars but I want an answer to Trade's question

"Did I read correctly that you're going to practice law "unless a great restaurant job comes along?""

That was my first question when I read that original post . . .

Wow ... thanks for all the input. I appreciate what Terry is saying, but I think I'm convinced to leave the cars here, although no one ever replied about the Acura.

Now to respond to some specific replies:

To TRADE and GOALUSVI - Yes, that's no typo. If I could find a great management position at a great restaurant, I'd consider doing that as opposed to practicing law. Why not? I enjoy restaurant work and I'm good at it. Being a lawyer isn't necessarily glamorous or fun. I will certainly get licensed and would enjoy practicing, especially if I could do it in flip flops! In fact, my initial search is for legal work. However, I can't resist the temptation of maybe a PT restaurant job, even if I get a legal job. If I were ever your waiter you'd understand because we would both enjoy ourselves.

To BECKY R - You're mean. Why shatter my dream of cruise ships full of eager, vacationing, out-to-have-fun girls flooding the island and looking to be romanced by a nice "local" guy wishing she'd stay. Now I'm bummed. Hopefully I'll find a nice lizard to keep me company.

This is Alice in the Looking Glass speaking.....your false dreams - baby, keep 'em, you're gonna need 'em...and if you can find love with a cruise ship girly in 6 hours or less, hey.....go nuts! You're good!

Hey Flip,

A few years ago, my husband and I walked into a restaurant, and our waiter was our tax accountant. We said hello, ordered our drinks and kind of looked at each other.....what's up? The food and service were great. Our tax return has needed additional attention after filing ( more money, not much, ..but still...) the last couple of years.

I'm not really complaining about this, but one expects their "professionals" to be good enough to make a living at what they do. We continue to use the same accountant.....haven't been back to the restaurant.....found it embarrassing.. ..also, moved to another island.

What I am saying is we didn't find it to be "too big a deal", but can see where some might not have the desired confidence level.

Lawyers here don't wear flip-flops, but they don't wear wing-tips either. It's more "island professional".

Regarding cars: check the local paper for prices, maybe call a few numbers a week or two later and see what it actually sold for, (most people are nice and will tell you) check the blue book, add the shipping and misc. expenses, add a little for "island inflation".

Good luck to you, and.....bring your own girl!

Thank you for the prudent advice Juanita and I agree with what you're saying. If I were a lawyer, that is all I would want to do. But until I get licensed, I was thinking about waiting tables a couple nights a week if I were to get a job at a law firm as a law clerk/paralegal. Yeah ... it would be wierd to have your lawyer take your order.

I liked what you had to say about car values. It seemed like there might be some "island inflation." Still pondering this decision.

Well I guess I'll be bringing my own girl. Seems like I've lost this battle and must accept the truth. Good thing my girl inflates easily with a pump. She'll even fit in my carry-on! (oh yeah, she doesn't talk back either)

Another point of view. On STX we have a cardiologist who sings and plays guitar a couple of nights a week in various bars. I never really considered this unprofessional. I thought it was kinda cool that he was living the way he wanted.
