Wow, if we changed the streetlight bulbs like we change various commissioners, we wouldn't have any lights out!

Okay, so we have a new commissioner, one who has been in the department for 22 years. Hopefully he is aware of not only the public crime, but also the in-house crime.

What's your wish list?

My wish list is that they start publishing and improving evidentiary related conviction rates (really what I'm saying is a decrease in people getting off due to lack of evidence.) Too many cases go nowhere due to poor evidence generation/preservation/pursuit.

I say your wish could come true...

STX has taken delivery on 2 new Mobile Forensic Vehicles about 6 weeks ago. Not sure if both vehicles are for STX, but one is better than none.

Yeppo, that's on my list too.

Over the weekend I watched an officer issue a parking ticket to someone who parked in a fire zone. It was about 10am. The car moves, then is replaced by a truck with a guy selling stuff to tourists out of his truck. I watched the same officers drive by numerous times, they even pulled over a vehicle at the same corner to issue a ticket, but they did NOTHING to remove the guy selling in a fire zone. It seems they gave the first car the ticket so they could make room for the truck!

Or the person in the car wasn't a friend of the cop & he did know the vendor. They seem to disregard laws when "he's just trying to make a living" (and he's a friend or relative.)

My wish list :

1. Would like to see something down here like that show on Animal Planet......Animal Cops i think it is.

Trained officers who can locate the abuse and the court knowledge to follow the conviction through.

Also the forensic labs will be nice if they come with someone who knows how to use the stuff.

and stiffer sentences for harden criminals who are convicted. Funny how you can get life sentence for rape and only a few years for a murder.

All the equipment in the world won't help it they're too concerned with possibly implicating their brother, mother, friend, cousin, cousin's friend, etc. I've lived in many states and a few countries over the years and have never seen so many cases kicked for 'lack of evidence' (or compromised evidence) as I have here (this is even in the case of grisly murders, rapes, etc. where evidence is left behind.)

I'd also like to see anybody from here who is convicted sent off-island for sentencing and incarceration so they can get real penalties instead of the Friends and Family discount...

I would like to see him implement policing based on the Broken Windows theory. Start enforcing all the little laws that are broken daily- crossing on the double yellow, cruising through stop signs, car seats for children, window tint, public lewdness. I would also like to see them get out and walk a beat, get to know the players in the neighborhoods. Scofflaws beware!

I believe they could balance the budget just giving out traffic and parking tickets.

Parking tickets to fix budget.....hahahaha! If that was the case, the bike cops here in STX should have paid the deficit long ago!

How about ticketing all the cars without working brake lights....90% of the cars here have none or one.

Maybe even handing out tickets and fine for littering........Watched a guy change his oil at Altoona park & just left the mess........couldn't even bring himself to bag and hang his trash in the trees like everyone else (which I find annoying....just take it with you).
Wait, that wouldn't work either......watch the police cruisers roll down the windows & toss trash to the curb as they drive in plain clothes....or was it a family member out joy riding.........never can tell here.

Me,same sort of thing.
I needed to make a delivery for my wife to Dazzlers/Dynasty , I had a valid parking permit, but BC a taxi was backed up too far, I was slightly in the yellow.
I was asked to move (I would have gotten a parking ticket if I wasn`t paying attention).
After I moved, and traveled in a circle back to dazzlers/Dynasty, the taxi tuck moved back & took 2 parking spots!
I went to 1829 & found a cop & explained,he said give the taxi a few minutes!
So,the taxis again are Holier than thou & trump a wholesale distribution parking permit issued by the police dept.......

Soon to come,my DWC story!(way wore than this parking taxi favoritism stuff)

There are so many things I want to see happen...where to start...

How about when a mother files a report that her daughter has been inappropriately touched, that #1, the officer taking the report cares, #2, the officer taking the report turns the info over to CPS to let them investigate( this action is mandated by VI Code), and # 3, SOMEBODY from VIPD care enough to walk across the street from Rainbow Complex where it has been reported numerous times that the perp was hanging out at the gas station!

This was my latest story...

You've probably seen the latest "Police Check Points", checking for seat belts, license, registration, etc. Last week, they were in the Sunny Isles area and were pulling lots of people over. I thought, "Wow. This is great! Maybe it will make a difference."

Shortly thereafter, I had to buy groceries at Plaza. While I was driving my cart through and buying groceries, there was a young woman (25-26 years old) on her cell phone the whole time. She was telling the other person that she got stopped in her car. She doesn't have insurance. She doesn't have a current registration. Her car has never been inspected. And, she doesn't have a driver's license. So, she got a ticket. Then she proceeded to tell the person on the phone that the police officer told her not to worry about the ticket because she could just rip it up on Tuesday. Only certain tickets would be turned in. Then, she drove off (without insurance, registration or license) and was told to have a nice day.

The last thing I heard from the conversation was, "Well, you know. That's how things are down here. Everything's a little backwards."

The murder rate in STT and STX is FAR< FAR < FAR above the national average. But everyone knows that. No change in police commissioner will change that. Until some drastic things are done.

Over the week end a boy was killed when he fell out of a pickup truck but we have seat belt laws! It would seem to me that a boy riding in a pickup has a much bigger chance of being injured than one in a car. Can the DMV give us a listing of children injured in a car vs a in the back of a pick up? In the main land you can not ride in the back of a pickup, regardless of age unless you have a seat belt. The reason that the seat belt check goes on is that the federal government, the one who loves to spend you money and give away your children's future, gives the VI, as well as states, money to get more seat belt conformance.

Now they have a law the being worked on that would limit riding in the back of a pickup to a 16 year old and children supervised by this 16 year old. Why not use the seat belt laws that exist today. Just ticket anyone in the back of a pickup that does not have a seat belt!. Ask why there were not enforced and tell the parents of that little boy!

My heart goes out to that family and I hope the driver knows that he caused the death of the child by not making him use a seat belt.

Legislation is on the books to prohibit children from riding in the back of trucks...not fond of the "unless accompanied by an adult" part though

Maybe since the child is accompanied by the culture rich adult while in the back of the truck they will be protected by mystical moko jumbies and will not be in harms way..........*-)

Seriously this has always struck me as the most moronic thing I've seen here. There's no reason for any human of any age to be in the back of a pickup. I'd cite the driver automatically and give the driver a separate ticket for EACH person in the truck bed. VIPD should be EMBARRASSED that people are getting hurt or dying because they are transported openly as unrestrained CARGO.

why does the seat belt law NOT APPLY to pickups? If it is because pickups don't have seat belts then no one has a brain! That is why passing more laws does no good. Enforce those that you have. Of course it shows the the legislators are busy at work, creating useless laws by organizations that can't support the ones they have.

We have a saying that when the legislators are not in session (which is more often than not) the people made money that day.!

And boy do we have overkill in legislators in the VI. This is a small island with only 110,000 people in it. The ration of government people to the population is about 1 in 10. WOrST IN THE NATION!

Pass another useless law!

If I recall correctly, it's not mandatory to use a seatbelt in the back seat of a car either.

Who do you think he might choose for his new assistant?
A male?
A female?
Let's hope it's someone who has some sort of experience with the law, and I don't mean in an intimate way! Let's hope it's someone who cares to assist in ending the internal crime, not just someone who is willing to call into Crime Stoppers, but someone who actually cares for the community, not the position and salary!

in the states! people can ride in back of a pickup truck they just have to be seated on the flour of the bed . no age restrictions.

in washington state any way and if your car or truck was made before 1968 you dont have to have any seatbelts.
