Obtaining Replacement Title

We are selling our truck and have the registration, but don't seem to have the title. The truck was bought with cash and my husband swears he never got a title, just a registration? Anyway I've been reading old threads and people say that you must have both a title and a registration to sell. Can anyone tell me the process to get a replacement title and save me some time in lines or on the phone with DMV?

Thanks for any help! 🙂

Go to DMV with the registration. They will print you a title. Easy peasy!

A fee must be paid also.

I recently got my title for no extra charge because it turns out DMV never gave me the title when I first brought the vehicle into the territory and registered it years ago.

My husband swears he never got one. He bought from a dealer in 2006.

When I bought my truck 15 yrs. ago. I paid DMV a fee of $25.00 for a title that I never received since they had to have it mailed from STX, tho I was registering in STT> Do it before you need it, just in case.

Did you surrender your stateside title to receive a VI title when you first registered your vehicle after delivery?

I thought that was part of the procedure :S

Probably, but I don't remember. It was 8 years ago. I also didn't remember if they gave me a USVI title 8 years ago. After searching my files for the title, I finally went to DMV last month, prepared to pay, and they just handed it to me for nothing, after a super-short 5-minute wait.

I did it just a few weeks ago. You'll have to get the form at BMV, take it across the street to get notarized, bring it back, then wait a bit for them to print it.. it was $15 I believe. (plus the notary fee...)

They don't understand the title concept. They just issue you a new one when you sell the car. If it has a lien on the car it shows on the registration. They will then issue you another worthless title when you transfer the car. Weird.

If the DMV ask if there is a lien on your car, just say no. They have no way of knowing.

I am sure they do have a way of knowing and that is highly dishonest!

Actually...they really don't have any quick or easy way to verify a lien. Just like they have no way of knowing whether the paper you bring with your insurance info is really from the insurance company or your printer at home. They have to call someone to verify and we all know that they won't unless they have a very compelling reason, which is unlikely.

Hubby went this morning, walked in, and walked out 5 minutes later replacement title in hand. No notary required. Thanks everyone!

Yep, and my hubby always goes as soon as they open since he hates waiting in line. 😉

It's a 2005 Ford Explorer 4 Door SportTrack, meaning it has a truck bed. It's a good truck, reasonably low miles and 4WD, lots of recent maintenance, new batteries, tires, brakes, etc.

But really I was referring to the hassle of getting everything notarized and my husband going with the buyer to get everything transferred, etc. It sounds like a lot of steps.

Nope, no fee. She took his registration and told him to have a seat, and before he even could open his book she called him back to the counter and handed him the title.
