Ed go up two post and read my last one, it should answer your questions.

And come on if someone like Anderson Cooper did a bit on stx it would get 15 minutes and none of the news shows have much in the way of ratings. Because people don't watch the new. I don't think that is really the solution.

I think getting the federal govt more involved in what is going on in the usvi, sending more agents, etc. Giving fed peace officer status etc would be of alot more help.

greetings captain ed

under the US constitution, free speech, is so far, still in effect.
and i would still rather see peace there and local people given jobs and the hospitals and schools upgraded, and the government called to task about its corruption, before ONE t-shirt is sold...
i did live there for almost 8 years so i have an interest in the island AS A WHOLE.

I haven't seen this posted, but someone told me they did see it in the paper. This Saturday (8/15) is a local ceremony/sendoff for Peter. I think the time is 5pm. If anyone has a link to the story with details, please post.

Nobody's threatening your right to free speech, even anonymously . I'm very happy that the two of you ( whoever you are ) replied to my posting. That you (lrijah) no longer live here pretty much speaks the volumes that I expected it would when I first posed the question. Any inference that I care more about tourism than the island as a "whole" will of course be seen my most people living here as not true at all. I just firmly believe that continuing to promote St. Croix as a wonderful Caribbean destination has no downside. Jobs will be generated and a LOT of them will go to locals. If the tourism industry here is devastated a lot of locals jobs will be lost, and the tax revenues that go with the jobs; taxes that help pay for improvements at the hospital (and anyone who's lived here for very long know that while not great it is worlds better), and schools. Would it be great to have the Feds come in and help out? Absolutely. Will spewing off about this on CNN and Fox do it. As Betty pointed out, probably not. It would definitely hurt tourism and would doubtfully help anything.

Not quite, if I was unclear I apologize but what I meant was I don't think any news article on stx crime will do much to hurt stx. At most it would be 20 minutes of tv that is watched by a very small portion of the general population. How many people even watch the evening news anymore, let alone a new channel? It's not most it is some now days. So yes I think any attention we can get at this point to put pressure on the local govt is good. Things are so bad, I don't know what it will take for the community as a whole to wake up!

I do think getting the federal govt more involved and aware about how bad crime is here could only help. And I definitely thing the feds here need peace officer status. The police here have way too many problems and need all the help they can get.

i would not say it that way (screw the tourists) but i will say that when the u.s. virgin islands are safer for me, the resident, they will likely be safer for tourists as well. in other words, i appreciate the outcry when a visitor is harmed, but i'd like to see just as much when my neighbor is harmed.

those of us who live and work here (whether born here or there) cast a jaundiced eye on the scramble that occurs when someone of perceived significance raises all kinds of flags while most of us "can't get arrested". in other words, who to i have to date to get some attention here?

perhaps that's where that sentiment comes forward. the way it's expressed is now becoming more important than the reason for the feeling, so i am hoping to explain a bit from my own perspective.

Very good observation.

Peter was my friend and I mourn for him, but there are a lot of unsung heroes in this community who make great sacrifices every day and whose passing would not be noted...like the good women who fix meals for the street people in Christiansted every Saturday. This is a community full of wonderful, caring people and we should not be defined by the random criminal element in our midst, many of whom are the products of dysunctional homes and a lack of proper parenting.

trw, that's not what i heard...but since what I heard is just rumor i will not comment at this point. I kinda surprised you did, and very surprised the 911 op. tells all.

Reminder for those that loved Peter...Memorial service this Saturday (8/15) at 5pm..Hotel on the Cay...

This sure sounds like a big load of BS; I cannot imagine Federal Agents getting drunk and telling all--let's think about all this for a moment.......fuel for the rumor mill is all it is.

Some good for nothing kid shot a well known and well loved member of our community; Peter's children are here for his memorial, do you want them to be subjected to this.

Come on with this crap, cut it out.

Went to the Pickled Greek last night, first time for me and I enjoyed it. The place was crowded, we had a table of 20 so that helped. Good food, very friendly staff and Peter even threw in a sholder rub . . . ahhhh . . . what I could not get over was how small the place is. I just could not let my mind imagine that night and if it was a "hit" how easy it would have been for an innocent by-stander to get in the way . . . doesn't make sense.

I did not know Mr. Des Jardin and I vaguely remember his column (I don't live on the island), however this is a total travesty, a stupid crime resulting in a senseless murder. Instead of trying to form human chains the citizenry of the VI needs to march on the Governor's office and DEMAND that somehting gets done. Talk on local radio stations and letters to local newspapers mean absolutely nothing. You must go straight to your local government offices and DEMAND that something be done, otherwise things will remain the same and when the next crime happens you will sit around and complain and watch the same old, same old.

YEP..certainly would! In Florida there were 2 children murdered in the past month in government housing. One shot was meant for the dad and hit the child. He answered the door with the dad behind the child....Community is outraged here....AND they found the killers
the family said that if the police don;t fin them THEY WILL.....all 6 of them!!! Other was an innocent 15 year old on the first day of school

An 8 year old child is pretty innocent, especially in his own house
